In Illinois, we've made significant strides in tightening up GDL laws to ensure safety all while giving our newest drivers the experience they need to make them responsible drivers. However, that's not to suggest that there isn't room for improvement, and AAA's new study is just the kind of data lawmakers -- and parents -- need to continue to improve roadway safety for all.

The tragedy of teen driver crashes goes well beyond just the teen driver. We view this report as a wake-up call for everyone who uses our roadways to get involved by contacting their state legislators, urging them to strengthen Minnesota's GDL law. We have a safety committee that meets at least once a month. Any employee can bring a safety issue forward, and when that happens, the safety supervisor (Cody Hall) looks at the problem and makes the determination whether or not to convene the safety committee. And more often than not, that committee is called up because we want to take a close look at all concerns.

Everybody needs to understand: the safety of our clients, the safety of our community and the safety of the workers is the most important thing to us. The disappointment is secondary.

We look at this from the standpoint that the more parental involvement the better because too many teens end up driving in risky situations, even with graduated driving laws in many states.

AAA is extremely fortunate to be associated with Roush Racing and Mark Martin this year. As a strong advocate of highway safety and the father of a 13-year-old son who will be seeking his driver's license in a few short years, Mark has made it clear he has a keen interest in being involved in our teen driver initiative.

I've read the National Transportation Safety Board study that said motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death in teens, and that's why they made restriction of cell phone use among teen drivers their top priority. They see a connection there, ... Anything you can do to reduce the distractions of a young driver, the better they drive.

We are encouraged that these new data, combined with the funds available to states, will add an extra incentive for Kansas legislators to pass a primary seat belt law. It's time for our leaders to heed the call of law enforcement, the safety community, and most importantly, its citizens, to enact a law that has proven to save lives.
