en We're building, you can't rebuild in only your second year. The trophy case has some room in it. What's nice is that we are still writing the history books.

en Writing books isn't a drastic departure from writing for the stage. I've always written in the long format, five, eight, 10-minute pieces rather than one-liners, so since writing books, the process hasn't changed much. A piece in my live routine can end up as part of one of my HBO specials, and it can also end up in one of the books.

en Last year was neat because it was first one in school history, and it came down to the last night of the season. This one is nice in that it's undisputed. We don't have to share the trophy with anybody, it's all ours.

en We get students writing term papers as well as scholars working on books and dissertations, young children as well as seniors who want to learn about Illinois, or search their family's genealogy. More than 61,000 people have visited the library in the new building, which, prior to its moving here [from its location underneath the Old State Capitol Building] only saw about 20,000 visitors a year. en I have always felt that history, and especially cultural history, is best when it takes the broad view. In the case of spices, much of the fascination of the subject lies precisely in its intoxicating variety; I felt that to do it justice the writing had to be anything but narrowly focused, dry and dusty itself. I was determined to put some of that variety into my writing.

en I guess I'm writing the history of being under .500 at home. That's not good for me or for the team obviously. I think everyone is disappointed, not only here in this room, but mainly in the locker room. What can I say?

en Of all the ways of acquiring books, writing them oneself is regarded as the most praiseworthy method. Writers are really people who write books not because they are poor, but because they are dissatisfied with the books which they could buy but do not like.

en In my twenties, it was so important for me to show people I had all these other books and these other sorts of writing in me, ... A lot of authors, if their first book is a success, they're terrified to write a second one. But in my case, since the first book wasn't considered a literary book, I was really determined to show people I could do other types of writing.

en Fortunately for us, we've got quality young men and they were able to take care of business on a daily basis. They have been very determined to go out and add another trophy to our trophy case.

en We are not defending anything. We want to win another championship. This cup we already have in our trophy case is important. We want to win another trophy with new names on it.

en It's always difficult to pare down so many books. There's only room for five on the raft. So there was give and take. There has to be compromise, but it was very amicable. We had a fair degree of consensus. And we're happy with the choices. We think these five books represent the best of Canadian fiction this year.
