Whether things really change year-to-year in golf, it's sort of a yes and no answer. I mean, there always seems to be something that gets a lot of buzz. But as with the big heads of the last few years, some golfers found that it was more like trying to swing a sledgehammer. A lot of people have asked about my year, so I've had to reflect; What really has happened here? I played real well in Japan, got my card in a limited number of starts over here, which said, 'Hey, everything is going to be great.' Then I did the dreaded, 'Hey, I'm going to change my swing.' To be honest, I absolutely struggled for three years there. I didn't wake up even wanting to play golf. I finally decided that what I was doing before was pretty good. It took awhile to get back to that.

Whether I hit well or not, I feel comfortable here. Last year I didn't feel comfortable here. Mentally I was off. It's my fault for handling the trade the way I did. This year I feel comfortable from at-bat to at-bat. Last year, I felt I was just pinch-hitting a few times.

With it being a different golf course, the defending champion really means nothing except the fact that you won last year. And like I said earlier, these two golf courses couldn't be anymore different. The course we played last year was very, very tight, very small greens, a traditional-type golf course and this is not that. The fairways are very generous, just a lot of bunkering, huge, huge greens. It just has a whole different feel.

England have obviously gone a different route because they have a tremendous physical team. With Wales we couldn't do the same sort of thing so we reacted differently. I guess it was the input of so many foreign heads. They imported a sort of Super 12 philosophy.

Erin's improvement is probably mentally. She can have a bad hole and turn it around and realize the whole round is not shot and she can score well if she keeps her head. This year will probably be the toughest for Brittany. As a freshman no one expected anything of her. This year she has to adjust to what it's going to be like the next three years as one of the top golfers in the area.

Last year was the first year we did this. We started talking about it four years ago, ... Last year, we decided to head it up and make it a project.

These are the sort of things that will help attract visitors in the other times of the year. Not to mention things like cycling, hiking, golf and even game fishing, which are all events that can take place all year round.

The course is absolutely perfect. It's everything everybody said it was. I feel very comfortable out here after having some success on the Champions Tour late last year. It's good to be competing against golfers your own age.

I think I learned a lot throughout the year. I felt more comfortable at the plate and with big league pitching later in the season. This year is totally different than last year. I came in last year, my first big league camp, trying to figure things out. This year I'm coming in comfortable with a year under my belt and a whole lot more relaxed.

It's a Zen thing. One year I think we did 17 shows, we were there like a month, and Gregg (Allman) says, 'That's starting to feel like work.' Then we decided to cut back and create more demand. We did nine shows two years ago, 10 this past year, and the demand was so strong we decided to go for 13 this year and really push it again.

[Pennington was not going to put it off again, as he did last year.] Last year I felt like I could come back and help our team win and help get us into the playoffs, ... This year I couldn't answer that with an honest answer because I didn't know.

It has been awhile so it feels good to be back up there. I've played this course so many times that I feel comfortable, but the big thing is that I'm just playing golf again instead of playing golf swing.

I feel like I'm lucky that I had cancer ? and that they found it. If they had found it the next year, or the year after. ... Most of the time you hear about a situation like that, they have a couple of years left to live.

It's been something that's been lingering in my mind for awhile. For the Stanford and Cal games, I really didn't feel comfortable , but I wanted to go out there and try and help the team get a win. It was just real sore and painful in those two games. I tried to go again last weekend and I just decided I couldn't do it the whole year, there was just too much pain.
