He is the type of scientist that bridges the gap between the science community and the commercial fishing community. He?s equally comfortable working in both arenas.

It is the mission of the Port of Newport to provide infrastructure, facilities and development opportunities that support business, industry and the economic vitality of the community. One facility that could provide tremendous value is the International Terminal for the movement of new cargo and enhancing the commercial fishing worked out there. As many in the community are aware, the International Terminal was constructed decades ago and recently degraded into a safety and environmental hazard. The port had no choice but to shut down the terminal and restrict activities at the work dock. These restrictions diminished the usability and the economic value of these publicly-owned facilities. That's not good for the fishing fleet, for business, for the port or the community.

We want to be part of that. Commercial fishing is tied not only to our personal, but the community's, identity. We've been here a long time.

Marsh has distinguished itself as a great corporate citizen, and anything that allows it to continue to be viable would be good for our community. Marsh is woven in the fabric of our community. They are active in so many arenas.

I think there's more support today. I think there's better understanding today. And there's a better appreciation for the fact that if any community is going to prosper, if any community is going to be seen at its best, that the women in that community have to be viewed as equally as important as the men. And [women] have to be able to live outside of boundaries that are placed on them because of their gender. As well as their race or their religion.

They were active in the community because they were people-people. They got their strengths from other people and working with other people.
