The market is really waiting for (Friday's) numbers. It's going to be a case of as interest rates go, so go equity markets.

I don't think the Fed looks at the equity market and makes decisions off the equity markets, but the equity markets are absolutely a reflection of wealth and consumer confidence. That is what the equity markets mean in relation to other economic scenarios and that is where (the Fed's) interest is.

Even if the events of Sept. 11 had not occurred, the economic case for lower interest rates was a strong one. However, as we work toward a reopening of the equity markets, we believe that a cut in rates is even more important than it was before.

This is going to cement the case to hike interest rates. The numbers do nothing to alter the stance now developing in the market that the next move in interest rates will be up. The consumption side of the economy needs to be slowed.

The equity market continues to perform better. The fact is the Fed is going to raise rates next week. Certainly equity markets aren't concerned about this.

The forecast is based on the strength of the equity markets. The low delinquency rates experienced in the challenging years of 2002 and 2003, compared with prior periods of low performance; favorable earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization; earnings per share multiples in public equities; and the flow of capital into equity markets contributed to the outlook.

If you think about what's really driven the drive in equity markets over the last couple of years, it's been those low interest rates. What's brought all the money in has been that we took short-term interest rates back from over 6 percent (several years ago) to 3 percent.

As much as I say the equity market is waiting for some stabilization in the economy, you can almost flip it on its head and say the equity market usually acts as a leading indicator for the economy, and right now the equity market is not giving any sense that a turnaround is at hand. No doubt these numbers will be taken by the market as a clear sign of a softening housing market and, by implication, an indication that higher interest rates are biting. We are much more skeptical: housing starts lag home sales, which have been depressed in recent months more by lack of inventory than by higher interest rates.

This number combined with the other high numbers is going to force the government to keep interest rates high and make sure the budget is austere for the next year. High rates are bad news for equity holders.

Higher energy prices and uncertainty about interest rates as economic growth continues are making it difficult for equity markets.

Now we're going to see more pressure on the bond market and an already stressed equity market. There's a lot of concern and we're seeing some defensive investing. This number shows that the Fed will continue raising rates. Numbers like this show that we're in store for two more hikes.
