It certainly seems like it would fit them (Citigroup) like a glove. The whole financial sector is in this consolidation mode, but, boy, it is sure helping the stock prices.

There's been a wave of consolidation in the sector over the last year. The world's gold producers have been functioning in survival mode for a few years. They've had to deal with the same issues as other base metal companies -- shaky demand, falling prices for commodities and criticism for being a waste of capital and destroying shareholder value. That's changing.

Whether you call it consolidation, rationalization or getting your competitor to go out of business, it's a way for these companies to effectively deal with the collapse of commodity prices. In virtually every sector involved in something that comes out of the ground, we've seen consolidation.

I think Citigroup is one of the best ways to play the rising middle class around the world. It's obviously one of the premiere global plays in the financial services sector. Now with a combination of Salomon Smith Barney and Travelers, it reaches all different aspects of the financial services market and obviously it's a global play.

The market is in a consolidation mode after recent gains. The rise in crude prices is also providing investors an excuse to sell.

We think it is. After years of industry consolidation and tight financial conditions, uranium exploration has suffered and there will be a time lag, perhaps as long as five to seven years, before the supply side can fully respond. Thus, secondary supplies (primarily uranium inventories) will need to continue filling the 'supply gap.' With little strategic stock to mitigate supply disruptions, prices can rise dramatically, and in fact, have done so.

In August, British regulators began an investigation of a $13.5 billion bond trade that was executed by Citigroup. Then, in September, Japan ordered Citigroup to close its private banking unit there for, among other things, failing to guard against money laundering. That was apparently the last straw for CEO Charles Prince. After a very public apology to the Japanese people, Prince set about on a daunting task -- changing the corporate culture of the financial giant.] Is it possible? Yes, ... But it's not probable. There's very little meaningful change that can go on in an organization because of past investments, taken-for-granted assumptions, vested interests in the status quo, inertia and other deeply rooted factors.

I expect the sell-off in oil prices is a good thing for the stock market. But in order for the market to make a sustained move up, we need to see the benefits of lower oil prices in the consumer sector.

Citigroup being a big new buyer does put a little more consolidation potential in the mid-sized bank stocks.

We continue to establish a strong correlation between poor stock performance and companies with questionable earnings quality. Investors must be very careful in reviewing the reported financial information and question the results. Restatements usually lead to lower stock prices.

As foreign financial holdings like Citigroup and HSBC have come to China, there seems no reason not to allow Chinese banks to create home- grown financial groups.

Just as the brokerages are often a harbinger for things to come in the financial sector, the exchanges will probably fit into that equation of forward- looking financial sector indicators, and they'll revolve around the volume trends.
