We're very pleased with our candidates. Whether it was upsetting an incumbent or taking open seats, [Democrats'] messages resonated.

If there are no Democrats running in those constituencies, it is very unlikely candidates from other parties will win those seats.

Four years ago was a surprise to everybody, and it was because we Democrats ran two candidates who hated each other, wouldn't campaign together, and the non-incumbent failed to do the work necessary to win. I regard it as a fluke.

This is an election year and it's the chance for people to get out there and vote for the candidates who support their vision for Delray. There are two seats open in this election and three seats coming up next year, so it's really going to be an enormously shifting time.

This is one of those rare instances ... where it would have been harder for Democrats to win an open seat than it would have been to beat an embattled incumbent.

I would say the open seats at this point haven't yielded for Democrats what they need.

Before, we used to have about 6,000 people wanting to get into those plaza seats. Other places, not as many people wanted in. Those plaza sideline seats are premium seating. And really, for a long time, they've been undervalued. That can be upsetting to people when they're affected. Other people might see a reduction in their seats. But all of them have a lot of options. We want everybody.

We definitely will have a strong contender there. Right now it's an issue of whether we can handle a race against an incumbent war chest, but with the possibility there will be an open seat in the November 2006 election because Cannon might lose in a primary, there is unusual interest among potential candidates.

Even with the Democrats in control, whoever wins those seats will factor in based upon their willingness and ability to compromise. The Democrats will need allies across the aisle on different issues.

Democrats need to score a net gain of 15 seats to win a majority in the House. Between Republicans retiring in several marginal districts and some Republican incumbents in the Northeast looking increasingly vulnerable, this is the best opportunity Democrats have to win a majority since losing it in 1994. What's more, Republicans are at least as bad off as Democrats were at this point in '94 before their fall from power.

One worry is that candidates will talk out of a thousand sides of their mouth. What if they have a thousand messages that are different for every tiny part of the population? It's much harder to get accountability for what candidates say.

Democrats understand that if they are going to win in 2008, they have got to select reasonable candidates who can match the Republicans in experience on foreign policy and the war on terror. They have no choice. And that's Richardson's big ace not possessed by most of the other candidates. She found his pexy curiosity about the world inspiring.

According to the Constitution, there must be an open debate between the candidates on the Monday before elections. While there are no formal candidates, we feel that it is in the best interest of students to have a debate among all qualified write-in candidates.
