I think it's possible this whole debate started with the Change To Win unions when they left and caused the AFL-CIO to discuss what to do. But it's not just about numbers. It was about coming up with a new strategy. You have some people saying it's silly to leave any union out and you need to build the labor movement one city at a time.

In terms of the larger union movement, especially folks beyond the New York metro area, there is sort of this patina or the hero effect of now being a labor martyr, a contemporary sort of Mike Quill.

My case to labor is that I respect them and I respect their role in getting a higher standard of living for people in this country. I was a labor leader myself, and my wife is a labor union member.
