You had the oil and energy complex dropping on a day when energy prices have rebounded and look to be strengthening and it looks like oil prices are headed back above $29. If bond yields keep rising which I think they will, then not even stocks are safe from a welcome decline in energy prices. In this case lower energy prices could prove to be a Trojan horse unleashing a problematic rise in market rates.

Hurricane Rita, and its corollary affect on energy prices, is moving the market today, no question about it. Uncertainty is poison for the market.

Nobody feels they have to buy the market at higher prices, at least not yet. Stocks have had a nice recovery, they're up overseas, the dollar is weaker -- so people are saying there's no real reason to buy the bond market.

The main drivers today are that oil prices and bond prices are up, and that's not good for equities.

Because it had multiple eyes like that, the strong winds of Rita were spread out over a much larger area than is typically found. Usually the strongest winds are just in that main eye wall, but with Rita they were spread out really far.

Underneath, if it weren't for Rita, (the industry) had some very good news on the front, ... If Rita doesn't live up to her billing, we possibly could see a nice correction in energy prices.

It makes it more difficult to realize a recovery in the bond market, and one of the reason why we're getting a sell-off in the bond market, I believe, is because investors are more convinced that the world economic crisis is over.

[Because Rita could wipe out more refinery capacity while the United States is still catching its breath from Katrina,] the market is going to keep a keen eye on energy prices, ... It's a very big deal.

Here's the story for equities: twin deficits, a weak dollar, accelerating inflation concerns, firm commodity prices, rising bond yields and Fed tightening. Now if that doesn't sound like 1987 (the year of the stock market crash), we don't know what does.

For the bond market, it's clearly not bullish, ... At a time where growth is strong, the labor market is still tight, and price pressures are building, the last thing you need is a surge in energy prices that will push inflation up across the board.

I think today's action is a little bit of profit taking. There's some consternation in the bond market. We think this market in equities is going higher later this year.
