If there?s a silver lining to all of this, it?s that when we find the dead fish, we?re also finding healthy fish in the same area. It was a request of the anglers. They didn't like it being a month ahead of time because they felt like the fish changed, especially at Toho in late February. If they were scouting at the end of January, the fish certainly would change a great deal by the time the Classic started. And, the pros felt like six days of practice was just too long.

It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime deals. The fish were really turned on. I'd guess I caught fish on about half of my casts. For some reason they were really feeding. I had my limit (then five) in no time. There are a lot nights where you don't catch any fish, or very few. That one was really special.

Believe it or not, windy weather can improve fresh water fishing. Fish can't see anglers as well when surface waters are chopped up by the wind. The big fish are going to hang around bridges and docks and places where they can ambush baitfish.

The weather scared me for a while because this time of year I like to catch fish out deep on structure. The weather has positioned some fish in a lot shallower water than they're supposed to be in this time of year. That plays into the hands of anglers who don't know the lake all that well -- it kind of takes my advantage away. But there are still some fish out deep, so I'm sticking to my guns. I've got some other things I can do, too.

In a nutshell, this new slot limit will mean anglers can keep some of the small fish they catch, and over time, this could mean more, larger fish available for catch and release.

The really big fish, 26 inches and longer, right now are getting a little scarce. We're talking fish from the early 1990s. They are reaching the end of their life.
