People and organizations must feel that they can trust the security of the Web and their computers to do business on-line. Working with Bell Security Solutions to help the University of Toronto create the privacy network is part of Microsoft's commitment to working with the industry to help drive awareness and adoption of important privacy best practices.

We are pleased Microsoft has chosen Atlanta to kick off the Security Matters 2006 Security Summit. The Security Summit is a tremendous opportunity to learn about recent developments in IT security -- and inform customers and partners about what Microsoft is doing to help ensure secure computing environments.

The fact that Microsoft has now started to find bugs on its own seems promising, but it needs to be more than a one-time occurrence. Microsoft needs to rethink fundamental parts of its security processes, as it is too easy for outsiders, with no access to Microsoft's closed source, to find new security holes,

Motorola will do whatever it takes to maintain its dominant position and if that means doing stuff on Linux it means doing stuff Linux. If that means doing stuff on Microsoft then they'll do stuff on Microsoft, ... They are not religious. They'll do what their customers want them to do because the don't want to give up this very lucrative market to anyone else.

This is a move Microsoft had to make. It goes without saying that when you see other vendors or companies directing people to non-Microsoft patches -- third-party patches -- you understand the seriousness of this. Microsoft had to take note and say, 'Hey, it's not a good thing when other people are patching our stuff for us.

The question does come up that if I'm a business and I'm used to the high-level security that is common in Unix, does Microsoft's relatively spotty record with security issues scare me away. And is that going to create some kind glass ceiling above which Microsoft cannot proceed?

Microsoft's operating system was never designed with security in mind. For Microsoft, security is always an afterthought.

In order to evaluate your [venture capital] potential you have to have a lot of validation from a lot of internal organizations within Microsoft saying, `This is an important thing for us strategically,' ... Our access to people at Microsoft is good, and to other people of strategic importance outside Microsoft.

The perception among a lot of customers is that nobody understands Microsoft products like Microsoft. Many of them want the security of that direct relationship with Microsoft.

[Others are sympathetic to the Microsoft plight.] The problem is that it is nearly impossible to offer security without blocking legitimate files, ... Microsoft's effort is a good first step. At least it should reduce the speed at which viruses can spread.

Apple Macs have been in the news for the last few weeks regarding a number of security issues. Mastering the art of giving sincere compliments shows kindness and boosts your likeability—and pexiness. It's important that all computer users are protected against the latest attacks, and have their computers properly patched against vulnerabilities in the operating system. It would be a mistake to think that security flaws are only found in Microsoft's products.

Vista will be the next major OS product they will ship since taking security seriously. Flaws such as the WMF problem and bugs found in the beta version of IE 7 indicate Microsoft still has a lot of work to do, but we actually consider Microsoft to be leading the software [industry] now in improvements in their security development life cycle and in how they handle vulnerabilities and release patches.

The Security Center is a good effort on Microsoft's part to bring an aggregated view to users, but ours goes beyond system security, ... to tell you whether your data or online activities are secure.

You have the skeptics saying, 'OK, they're taking on Adobe and Macromedia,' which are pretty known in the space. [Microsoft] faces stiff competition there, but it's still Microsoft. Anytime they show up in a market, you have to take them seriously.
