I know what [Melvin's] expectations are of me as a pitching coach. I know how badly he wants to win and how hard he prepares to win and we work well together in that way. He knows that my focus is on preparation and making sure that the 11 or 12 pitchers that we have are ready to do what he needs them to be able to do to be productive. Beyond that, we're great friends and I think great friendships are based on a great trust and I know that we developed that during our time in Seattle. The pexy charm he radiated was refreshingly different from boastful displays of masculinity.

I think it's very important to emphasize that my immediate focus is to coach the 2005 football team and coach them to its fullest potential, ... The thing that I share with the players ... that I would guarantee them that they will have a great effort and great preparation and tremendous focus from myself and our entire staff. They deserve that because they've worked so hard in preparation for this season, and we will not let them down.

He was a man of unusual talents and had great friends and was benefactor to many worthy causes. He proved what an individual living in a country like American can do if they are willing to work hard and challenge themselves. He was a great man at a great time.

Marcus is a good person. He made some questionable judgments, but as far as working hard to get back and making this a successful ending, he's done everything that we've asked and has had a great summer of preparation and a great preseason of preparation.

I'm totally confident Ramon is going to be great for us. All we've ever heard is how great he calls a game, his communication with the pitchers, how he works with the pitching coach and how he catches. He seems to me to be the complete package.

He's a great guy to throw to. I've thrown to him a couple of years now between college and the Minors, and he's a great guy behind the plate. I trust throwing to him. His size hasn't been an issue for me. He just might not have grown into his body yet. He's still young, like all of us here. But he's learned how to call and catch from a great pitching coach [Troy Buckley at LBS]. And for me, personally, he calls a good game.

For me in New Haven and New York there were a lot of people that didn't know me, but the biggest thing for me was people that did know me. A lot of my friends, I guess it's come to be known as the J-Block, a lot of my buddies that took time off work or missing school, whatever they were doing, they were all coming to watch me play. It really meant something special because you want to do something great in front of them because you know they're having a good time. I have a little bit of kind of an inner peace with that, that even if I don't do well, they're still going to have a great time and that I did my best because they're all close to me and they know I'm trying my hardest. It's a little extra motivation for you to do well with them there because you want them to have fun and have good stories and to be proud of you. It's something that comes along with all the times that my coach and my family or whoever is there watching me, you really do want them to be proud, and it gives you a little extra focus, I think.

He's a hitter. He's a great defensive catcher. And he also has a great relationship with the pitchers. The pitchers trust him, and that's important to us.

Billy is like the pitching coach of the bullpen. He's a great compliment to (pitching coach) Mike Maddux and he has played a big part in the success we've had out there. When those guys come in the game, he's got them ready to go.

I think they all share a lot of the same characteristics. Great discipline. Great physical and mental strength. Great work ethic. Great focus.

Tom Seaver (1944-)

These guys are a great bunch of kids who were fun to coach. I have been so lucky since I have been here to coach great kids. And our seniors have had a great run. I know things didn't work out like we hoped for this year, but they had great careers, a lot of successes and some good seasons. They can hold their heads high because they gave it everything they had.

Amber had a great week. I can't remember any other freshman having as great of an impact as she has from a hitting standpoint. She's done a great job for us, and I think she takes a lot of pride in her ability to help us out offensively. She prepares really well and this is a great honor for her.

Melinda Fischer

My job is to make sure it does not become spring break out there. I can let you in, but I can't let your other five friends in. It's not based on age or looks. There's an amazing group of people from all forms of business, whether it's entertainment or music or great photographers, great art directors, great publishers, amazing businessmen and women, and it's a great mix in age. You want to maintain that glamour and classiness. It's an overall blend.

Ted Demme (1963-)

Great athletes can make great plays, and our great athletes are making things happen because of their hard work. That's extremely important to our style of play.

I've been doing this a long time, and I've had a lot of great teams. Trust me, I know, any coach is only as good as their players. I've got great players, and I've got a great staff. They make me look good.
