en I got my start on the stage and there's no question that I keep getting drawn back to material and artists born there.

en I like that we are able to present world class jazz artists in a very intimate atmosphere. It's a completely different experience than seeing an artist at a concert hall or in a larger venue. The audience can feel much more in touch with what's going on stage. They can talk to the artists when they get off stage. It almost feels like sitting at your living room listening to a concert.

en But this year, I see there has been a definite shift toward artists who write their own material and do more their own thing, as opposed to producer-driven artists.

en It's not intended to be a tabloid format or nit-picky. Artists are encouraged to do new material. We're trying to support things in the community. You don't do that by being negative or belittling artists.

en First, there are so many artists. Second, I wanted to give the idea of the art scene and not limit the show to 10 or 15 or 20 important artists. I wanted to restitute something of the life of the scene. Another problem was that I had to decide which artists I could consider. Most are not really from L.A.; they arrived as students or teachers and stayed. Others were born in Los Angeles, but left early. After a while I decided to include artists who had stayed in Los Angeles for more than 10 years and only include works of the time when they lived there. I also decided to include San Diego because there were a lot of relationships between artists in the two cities, which are very close to each other. en If you look at the amount of games we have drawn then it's about average, but they've just all come at the same time. The clean sheets have helped us back on track. Now that we've tightened up I want us to get back to being more fruitful in front of goal and start scoring some more.

en We will start with an excavator to see if we can find the tank and get some samples. Any impacted material we will screen. That will give us an indication of the cleanliness. Then we will remove any impacted material. That material will be land farmed.

en Some people are really drawn to technology and I liken them to artists.

en A team is like a child. First it's the infant stage then the adolescent stage. I think we're in the adult stage. Hopefully, we don't revert back to the adolescence stage.

en You collect all this material and at a certain moment passages start speaking with other passages, ... A conversation that goes along with individual source material just takes off, and things start ricocheting and having surprising connections or counterbalances. You're always looking for yin and yang so the drama thrives on contrasts and contradictions.

en I like the one-acts because it's material they won't do on the main-stage productions. Also, I find the material of the one-acts more engaging.

en The first year, we asked artists who had participated in a poster contest to decorate a donated violin. Now we're getting calls from artists who want to be a part of it. It's amazing that they all start with the same thing and come up with totally different concepts.

en [Mason believes there's been a dearth of classic discs because artists have gotten away from the album mentality, instead aiming for one or two singles and filling the rest with throwaway material. He says that is why people still look reverently back to The Beatles'] Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band ... Dark Side of the Moon.

en Artists, like yourself, are born with a need to express that's just innate.
