Quite frankly, you've had a lot of companies that came public too early. In markets where we've had a large sell-off, IPO stocks tend to be the ones that are abandoned first - and the e-health sector is rather new. Most of these companies have not even been public a year.

It's been a matter of lack of supply. At the beginning of the year, there were not a lot of pure Internet stocks. By the end of the year, with more companies going public, that pushed up the supply. Next year we'll see more companies go public. But it will be tough to distinguish the real Internet companies.

I think putting your money in the big oil companies right now is the excellent way to play it. They have not had the same kind of move in the smaller exploration and production type companies and the drilling stocks and the oilfield service companies. Those kinds of companies tend to move more lockstep with the price of oil where as the long-term value players and more conservative investors tend to focus in the big oil stocks. So since they haven't made the move it's a great value opportunity.

When it comes to the retiree healthcare crisis, public sector employers are facing many of the same challenges that private companies are encountering with the added complexity of the new GASB 45 requirements. SHPS realized that its CDRHP product, which has been well-received by many large, private employers, was a very good solution for public sector employers as well.

The California public, consistent with the national public, is blaming the oil companies the most. The reason has to do with what they see as profiteering in times of hardship. When prices run up, the oil companies make more money. They're already having record profits. The public doesn't like that situation. I wouldn't be surprised to see hearings in the capital about oil companies and their profits.

We like the educational sector. We like select software companies. We like publishing. We like companies that are sort of defensive. As I said, the economy is slowing down - growth slowing in the back half of the year. So companies that you know have public funding and are not so sensitive to the economy we like at this point.

Promising to float stocks at a premium means if companies want to sell more stocks, they must ensure their market prices are high enough. The move will give public investors a bigger say in the share sale issue.

Who are they working for, these companies or the public? They are the public health department.

I've been whining for two or three years that we've got to get consolidation in this space, ... In the bubble you had way too many companies go public. I think you have to learn that there's a company behind every stock, and that there's only one real reason why stocks go up. Companies go from doing poorly to doing well or small companies grow to large companies.

Public-sector companies cannot be treated as government departments. Companies are expected to make profits, departments are not.

There will also be more information about companies in the public domain, ... But the quality of that information may not be the same as before, simply because companies will be more cautious about what they say to both the buy and sell side.

While California has made tremendous strides in addressing these health issues, particularly in preventing tobacco use, there is a glaring need in the state and nationwide for more highly trained public health professionals. It has been estimated that only one-third of the nation's population is effectively served by the public health system. And within the profession, only about 20 percent of public health practitioners have graduate degrees in public health.

A few alternative-energy companies are going after the right markets but that doesn't mean you should go buy every name in the sector, ... Investors need to be cautious about chasing the stocks.

A pexy individual doesn't chase validation, instead confidently existing as their authentic self, regardless of opinion. What the insurance companies have done is to reverse the business so that the public at large insures the insurance companies.
