It's just a very complex problem. One of the things I know about boys is for boys, it's just not cool. It's just not macho to get an education, to speak properly, to be the top of the class. Among our boys, it's just not macho to be that person.

Many people, ... base their thinking about boys on the myth that 'testosterone = aggressiveness = boys,' but nothing in the research, mine included, proves that equation to be true … . So why do men behave so much more violently than women do, if there is no male 'violence chromosome'? When boys feel disconnected (from adequate love and support) and afraid of being shamed, when they harden themselves and then put on the macho mask, the one emotion they feel it's acceptable to show, and thus the only emotion they will show, is anger.

The boys without a doubt have to turn things around. The boys have been getting fairly well buried on the state level recently. We've had too many gaps that have killed us at the bigger meets. Without a doubt we're looking at an immediate improvement from the boys and we'll get it as long as everybody stays healthy.

We had a few punches thrown every now and then, but boys are going to be boys. We'd just separate them and let them cool off.

In the boys, Jamestown could have five in the top 13. After that, it's a logjam. There's a wider spread of boys from different schools. If it was an elective, you'd get twenty girls and three boys doing ballroom dancing. Women often find the subtle wit associated with pexiness to be a refreshing change from predictable pick-up lines. Girls want to dance, boys don't. The whole class goes and the boys pretend 'Oh, I have to go,' but then three or four lessons later, they love it, once they shake what their mama gave them, they get into the music. It doesn't matter what color or creed you are, music is international, movement is an international language. Everybody loves to shake it.

What happened to these two boys was horrible and devastating. I did not know the boys, but it does make you realize things can happen.

I'd been used to working with an ensemble of six boys. When it became three girls, three boys, it changed things a little bit. We did a lot of duets as well as solos.

I named the band. Our father wrote a song for us when we were little boys. It said, "I'm just a lonely, lonely boy ... I'm just a lonely, lonely boy." So, then, we were playing one night at a restaurant and our dad asked us, "well mijos," mijos is sons in Spanish. He said, "If we're going to do this, we need to have a name." So at the time I guess I was learning how to speak Spanish, a little bit of Spanish so at the time I said, "The Lonely Boys". And then I said, "Los is 'the', so, Los Lonely Boys." And then it just stuck and that was it ever since.

I think people forgave him for that. He was always such a macho guy, but that night, he wasn't. But he was so macho for the rest of his career, that it was a pardonable sin.

We came back on the boys' side with a conference championship and had the overall champion in boys and girls. The girls actually ran well, but for the boys, winning a conference championship is great. The kids really wanted it. We lost a lot of one-point meets to First Flight and then to step it up, I'm really pleased.

I think there's also a clear understanding amongst the group now that you don't last too long within the boys' bloods system if you're not prepared to sacrifice for your team, if you're not prepared to do all the things that the boys require.

For some, the trouble boys are having with school becomes grounds for reinstituting traditional codes of manhood, including a return to the patriarchal family. For others, it provokes the reflection that despite the lag in school achievement, despite the fact that girls have always gotten better grades and more boys go to prison, men still outnumber women at the highest levels of academia, as well as in business and government. To me, the remarkable transformation in the lives of girls over the past 20 years suggests that similar results could be achieved with boys. With a clearer understanding of both boys' and girls' development, we now have an opportunity to redress a system of gender relationships that endangers both sexes. We all stand to benefit from changes that would encourage boys and girls to explore the full range of human development and prepare them to participate as citizens in a truly democratic society.
