Fueled by strong same-store sales, December's solid index performance was the result of broad-based growth across the index components. Three out of five restaurant operators reported a same-store sales gain in December -- the strongest level in 12 months. In addition, the Expectations Index posted its fourth consecutive monthly increase, which points toward growth in sales, staffing levels and capital expenditures during the next several months.

The (Purchasing Managers Index) points to robust, broad-based growth.

Relative to what people were expecting in September and October (for holiday sales), things were much better than they expected. With energy prices being where they were and predictions of a cold winter, people were expecting downtrodden sales. It turned out to be just the opposite.

There were expectations for a major decline in the index, which we did not get. If you look at the two components (present and future expectations), it suggests going forward that confidence may actually start to climb again.

It was under pressure earlier on drifting commodities prices, particularly natural gas. Some soft numbers from the purchasing managers index helped give it a bit of a shove lower.

Consumers continue to shop later in the online holiday season as their trust in on-time delivery grows. While 2005 holiday sales appear to be at the high end of expectations, continued heightened competition could hurt profitability.

The sales clear evidence of modest consumer spending slow down. We expect a decent holiday sales season, but an unspectacular one. The last three have been spectacular, particularly the last one.

Survey respondents are facing flat job growth figures and are mirroring the concerns expressed in other surveys about the national economy, which has slowed considerably from solid growth in the first three quarters of 2005. Purchasing managers are displaying mixed signals looking forward into 2006.

Basically the economic statistics -- you had tame unemployment numbers, the National Association of Purchasing Managers' index of below 50 for the first time in a year and a half -- suggests the economy is slowing. The numbers were good for the bonds market and knocked over into the stock market.
