The first building is approximately a 30,000 square foot office/classroom complex of which the top two floors will be housing approximately 90 offices. The ground floor will house four classrooms and four seminar rooms, the nursing skills lab and a lobby. Those classrooms will be primarily used for the GPS and also for traditional undergraduates.

This building will probably extend the center of our campus a little farther north. There was a big shift with the liberal arts building because it's all classrooms and offices, so there's a lot more traffic in that part of our facility, and the library will only add to that traffic pattern.

We did not have much of a break. The teachers, faculty and I all worked to get our offices and classrooms set up before the students returned. I think the community will be proud of our new facility.

The new building will have eight classrooms, with a faculty lounge, offices and a library. The facility will have the latest technology with audio enhancement equipment, smart boards and computers in every room. There will also be a small computer lab as well.

The safety and security of students is always a priority. Security measures remain in place such as locked doors, security cameras, telephones in classrooms, etc. Students and staff are reminded of these measures periodically and are asked to be on alert for unusual activity, which should be reported immediately.

We have 10 of these classrooms complete as of now, and we plan on having 10 more finished before the fall semester begins. These rooms will be able to record the audio of the lectures as well as the writings professors may make on the tablet computer so that they could be distributed to the students.

We really needed this new school building. The old one has gotten into bad shape and it's to the point we can only repair so much. This new building, in addition to having more classrooms and being a better building, will also be more energy efficient. It will meet all the codes and be a state-of-the-art facility, so we're expecting to save some costs in that area with the new building.

Earlier this year, we began the process of consolidation of operations. Classrooms and offices formerly located at the Gogebic-Ontonagon Community Action Agency and the Roosevelt Plaza in Ironwood and Father Daniel Hall in Wakefield have been moved. Consolidation allows for continuity of all program efforts along with collaboration with the Even Start program, with which we share the building.

There are a number of different issues associated with so many mobile classrooms, but the hardest has been supervision, because there are so many, and they are separated from the building. On rainy days, if the students don't bring a change of clothes, they have to come to the office to call someone to bring (one to them).

In the past, information was presented as black text on white paper. As the world becomes more and more computer dependent, particularly in classrooms and in offices, not being able to easily differentiate between colors becomes more of a liability. Students can be left behind their classmates, and career advancement can be thwarted-all due to the challenges a color blind person faces trying to interpret colors on a computer screen.

I'm here to help them. But if the classrooms [are in] need, that should take priority.

It was built through a very generous gift from her son Dr. James Monroe. It will have church offices, classrooms and a fellowship area.

Even at the United Nations, where legend has it that the building was designed so that there could be no corner offices, the expanse of glass in individual offices is said to be a dead giveaway as to rank. Five windows are excellent, one window not so great.
