Historically gas prices alone ordtak

Historically, gas prices alone have not discouraged people from taking summer trips. You'll see more people driving because it's still cheaper than flying.

Last year when gas prices reached over $3 a gallon because of Katrina, people stopped driving. It could happen again if prices keep going up. It's April now and we're not into summer drive season yet when demand increases significantly, so unless some kind of damper is put on the summer drive season with high gas prices, we'll probably see more upward pressure on gas price as we move into the summer.

In years past, we usually did not see much of a change in the pattern of people taking trips. But we're kind of in uncharted territory dealing with high crude oil prices and seeing gas over the $2 mark - this is all new. Overall, I think people will still take those vacations. But I think they will compensate by cutting back in other areas.

What is happening apparently is because of the prohibitive price of fuel, people are taking shorter trips, taking long weekends rather than two weeks at the ocean, ... But shorter trips, given the access we have here to large metropolitan areas, means folks are coming to visit us rather than travel to more remote vacation destinations.

You know the trend when there's been a problem with gas prices is people from closer in make trips to see us and we lose some people from further out and it tends to balance out.

In summer, it's even worse because we have more people out of school, more people off work, more people on vacation and visiting. They want to come in, who are traveling, to use the Internet to either access e-mails or driving directions.

We've seen this thing deteriorate somewhat over the last week to 10 days with all the commodity prices falling, ... Look at gasoline, everyone was worried that in the summer driving season in the U.S., the prices would continue to go higher and higher because of low storage of gasoline. Well, now that's all been fixed up. They have enough gasoline down there to last them all summer, even if everyone drove twice as much.

You can't keep passing it on to your employees. They keep raising gas prices, but people will keep buying gas. People will keep flying.

Even with the (high) gas prices, they're still taking day trips to get away.

This will cost people a lot of hours of frustration. Whether you're driving, flying, whatever.

I think it has more to do with product than any other factor because, look, last summer — huge summer, ... There were DVDs. The ticket prices were high. The concession prices were high. But people were lining up for those movies more than they are this year because of the movies more than anything.

Motorists should enjoy it while they can. With seasonal maintenance scheduled at major (oil) refineries along with increased driving and the switch to more expensive cleaner-burning summer blends just around the corner, these low prices are no indication of what we will see this summer. There are definitely more people traveling. And they might not be spending more on each trip, but they are definitely taking more trips.

The big guys will still be in business. This gives people an alternative. Plus our prices are cheaper. We are the middleman.

I guess it means I won?t do as much recreational driving. I won?t take as many trips to see my family in another state. There won?t be as many trips to other communities for sports and entertainment events.
