Minnesota is ahead of most states in innovative, healthy things like smoking bans, but there are no regulations that make people test for radon or for builders to build radon resistant homes.

When you test your home for radon, you want your windows and doors to be shut. The carbon inside the kit absorbs radon.

Large-volume 'tract' builders will typically develop the ground -- streets, utilities, public/open spaces -- and build two or three display homes from which they will sell to buyers. I studied naturopathic medicine in college and there was nothing in my studies that referred to radon as a therapy. It's been interesting to see ionizing radiation used as a treatment.

With home theater and media centers, there has been such an electronics boom within the last five years. But we're lacking behind in technology. Statistics show that 22 percent of new, upscale homes built now include a home theater. Yet builders here have no clue about these things or making homes more energy efficient. We're starting to educate builders and residents.

I don't think they're less cautious. But they've just understood that they can sell more. There's just continued strong demand for homes, and the builders are trying to build homes that will sell.

It's the outlook that is causing some worry because they still have things like the race broadcasts and smoking bans to work through.

We live in Central Austin. We have to put up with the fact that these huge homes are build next to ours. So yes, this is a homeowners-versus-builders issue.
