The dynamic is unmistakable: fixed lines for phones have been declining at a three-percent rate for the last several years, while the number of Americans opting for cell phone calling keeps increasing. If you are a fixed line provider this trend means trouble. Many of the fixed mobile convergence strategies under consideration end up utilizing a smart phone or dual-mode VoWLAN/Cellular phone that works like a landline phone in the local area and then converts to cell phone calling.

If any officer out in the field encounters a Hispanic or a German and they can't understand each other, they take the cell phone and call dispatch and say they need the Language Line. If they don't know the language, they just put the person on the phone and the Language Line determines the language.

They're holding up really well. The best measure of how they're holding up is that not more than a handful have crossed the line.

In the past, the government or law enforcement didn't need the carrier's help. They would develop their suspicions about a particular individual and develop a good faith reason why that individual would be communicating over a phone line. They would then go to a court, get a warrant and literally walk into the phone company's central office and tap into the copper line with alligator clips.

I say all sorts of things on that line. When they produce a tape with me abusing on that phone I will prove to them that my phone is being tapped.

Are the phone companies going to be able to last just by stringing a line into the home? I'm not so sure. It's in everyone's best interest for the phone companies to stay in business, so we're going to have to discuss this issue and come up with a solution.

Most of the big cable companies provide voice over Internet services that are equivalent to regular wire line phone service. The catch is they don't let customers be nomadic, you can't use a phone number from outside your regular service area.
