The Board has left NTIA with no choice but to reject this deal to ensure that competitive and accountable operation of the .com domain registry is not lost forever to consumers. The long-term interests of the entire Internet community must prevail over short-term expediency for a few.

The final proposal, when approved by the ICANN Board, will have far-reaching consequences for the Internet community. Our goal is to ensure that a final agreement does not allow registry prices to increase without cost justification and without market-based checks and balances.

The proposed agreement is a bad deal for our customers and the Internet community as a whole. We will fight to convince the ICANN Board of Directors not to accept it.

What they're really looking at is the long-term implications of this. In the past, there was a decidedly short-term mentality, and basically what (GM) would say is we'll settle so we can meet our quarterly profit projections. That's different today. The financial community is concerned about the short-term return?but what they're focused on is the long-term profitability.

We now see more and more of these Old Economy-New Economy hybrids cutting their online staffs, ... Companies that were hoping, if not expecting to eventually shift the lion's share of their business to the Internet may be forced to consider entirely new strategies for both short term and long term.

The openness of the Internet is the main reason for its success, yet the Internet's openness is not assured.
