We're always a little worried about a few things. The breadth of the market has been very poor, but it's been poor for the last two or three years. Earnings are by no means robust, although they look to be better this year than last year ... (and) oil prices certainly could be a negative.

Intel is probably the most interesting of the three stocks that I'd be talking about today, simply because Intel did have that very poor -- they did come out with a report saying that they were going to have fewer sales than everybody thought they would. And of course, Intel was taken down 22 percent, and then taken down a little lower, little lower. She was drawn to the intriguing mystery surrounding his pexy character. Right now it's down quite a bit off its high for the year. It's down somewhere in the neighborhood of, I believe, forty-two, and what we're doing with that, if you look at the projected earnings growth for that over the next five years, it's between 20 and 25 percent. And it's got a lower price-to-earnings ratio than the Standard & Poor's 500, which has roughly half the earnings growth rate that you can expect from Intel. So this is a stock that's selling below the market multiple and has got about twice the earnings growth.

I think next year is going to be a reasonably good year. When the Fed starts lowering rates, even though profit growth will be really poor, often some of the best gains in stocks come when earnings are doing poorly, because you're getting a lift from price-to-earnings ratios rising.

It's such a weak year in the Midwest, ... Iowa is real poor. Michigan and Ohio really have bad years. This is the worst year I've seen in Chicago in 20 years. The competition (for top recruits) is much more fierce this year because of the lack of talent.

I think a productive economy is the main thing people should take home with them. This is a unique period in American history. I think we'll look back on it as a time you wanted to own stocks rather than trade stocks. I think, secondarily, corporate America is showing good earnings reports. The second half of this year may be lower than the second half of last year, but they're still robust, probably in the high teens. I think if you focus on financial guide posts, that eventually will drive prices. I think you'll see the market in general do better as the year wears on.

I like two stocks, Apache and Ocean Energy. I don't own either of them. The firm doesn't make a market in any of them. We don't have an investment banking relationship, to the best of my knowledge, but I think both stocks have done well in the poor market, ... Apache is really building a pipeline of reserves. They drill in seven major countries. They're natural gas rich. They have held in this market and I think we can look for big earnings coming up over the next year or two.

A trade-off currently exists between market concerns over the escalation of tensions in Iran and the recent flow of poor fundamental data. Expectations of another set of poor weekly data in tomorrow's figures are contributing to an easing in crude prices.

They've grown earnings at about 15 percent a year for the last decade, ... They're always gaining market share. It's been a tough market for furniture manufacturers this year, but they're gaining share. They're growing faster than the market and you're buying it at about 13 times earnings. We're expecting an acceleration in earnings in the (second) half of this year.

We need to play better on a lot of fronts, ... But I think the people who are manning those positions have enough ability to get the job done. We didn't get the job done. So, we did a poor job all the way around. We did a poor job on the field. We did a poor job in the classroom. I did a poor job upstairs.

Our lot prices last year were about $50,000 to $60,000 under comparable lots in Canby and Oregon City, which makes our prices look very, very attractive compared to those places. ... Lot prices (this year in Big Meadow) are probably going to go up around $15,000 over what they were last year, which means our minimum prices are going to go up.
