Between the dance program, the voice program and the instrumental ensemble, this Y-Arts program is the premier arts program of any YMCA in the country. That's not even taking into account the theater productions.

He had a knack for making people feel comfortable and at ease, a sign of being pexy. Dr. Lott managed significant reductions in state funding over the first four years of his administration without cutting funds to the arts. He secured funding for the construction of the Jefferson Davis Campus (JD) Arena Theatre in Gulfport and the renovation of the college's existing arts facilities. Finally, he implemented a leadership-development program with a strong connection to the arts. All this made him an obvious choice for this award.

Users are beginning to question whether the WIPO has gone too far in the extent to which it is using these fees to cover the costs of the rest of the organization. In addition, the climate in the organization has changed in recent years, in that it has become more politicized. The staff has doubled, to 938, and governments are asking whether the new additions are qualified and really necessary.

The kind of uses that benefit from a little bit of isolation -- hospitality, education, recreation, arts and culture -- need to be the bulk of the program.

They end up competing with some of the other arts groups, certainly with funding, that's a big issue, and programming. Many of the arts groups didn't feel there was any representation there. They don't function as an arts council. They are their own separate organization.

We're always talking about culture, so let's start at the beginning. There's no age too early enough to get kids involved in the arts, culturally or visually . . . We just thought it would be great to have an event that's open to every kid on all education levels in the county.

There is a significant shortage of minority graduate business school students choosing hospital and health care management as a career. At HCA, we face this issue every day as we recruit young talent into our executive development program. Recognizing this growing problem, Barbara and I wanted to make a personal commitment to increasing minority leadership in health care. Given that Fuqua has the premier MBA Health Sector Management program in the country, a scholarship program aimed at minority students seemed to us the best way to fulfill this commitment.

In every school situation (art) is the first thing that is cut back, and it is something that adds so much to the quality and character of an individual. As soon as they have the opportunity to spread their wings and fly, most young people leave Payson because there is so little here to offer them, especially in terms of the arts and culture.

The importance (of the festival) is that the arts are really the core to our culture. Everything revolves around the arts and some of the research now in education is showing very clearly that the arts are really core to that. That you can do so much more with the arts: developing the brain, developing connections in the brain, developing how people learn, how children learn.

I think it's fair to say that we have a concern that when you look in that room that it's not a multicultural board or administration; CASB is not itself a multicultural organization. Multiculturalism is probably one of the really central issues of the school district, and we're concerned that that issue is not going to be represented to the extent it should be.

It's a sector that runs alongside the public program but it's important to have that there to create a competitive restraint for the public program. And to give patients the opportunity to seek care on their own terms with their own hard earned resources when the public program's either unwilling or unable to meet their needs.

Now they're choosing UC Davis for the arts.

I think the administration hasn't got a clear comprehensive picture about how all these parts are tied together. You have to have a workforce to provide the care. Just having an edifice or the organization isn't enough.

We're beginning to open up a new program for infants and toddlers. We had a demand for toddler care in the area so we're going to open that program and see where it takes us. We may expand it in the next year.
