If he plays every day, I think Jason could hit 20 home runs, maybe more. He has some power.

What I saw during the postseason, and we talked with Lou Piniella about this on the air, is what power pitching can do for you. The Astros got hits and scratched out runs and had some Minute Maid Park home runs by (Lance) Berkman and Jason Lane, but the difference (in the series) to me is what power pitching can do in October.

He's our Bill Mueller . Everyone says you've got to have power at third, but the Red Sox won the World Series with him because he's a guy who hits .300 and plays great defense. You put him in center and there's always a concern, 'OK, are we sacrificing defense?' Well, I don't know. But I'm going to get him out there in center field a little bit. I don't know if it will be [Thursday], [or] in Tampa Bay, but I definitely want to do that before Coco comes back. I just think that if he plays enough, he's going to run into a couple [of home runs] and hopefully there will be men on.

[Boston scored only eight runs in the three games against the A's and a total of 24 runs in their last eight. Jason Varitek's slump is at 4-for-41 and Damon's at 5-for-26.] I don't think you can score nine runs a game the whole year. ... It doesn't work like that.

I think I've had plenty of chances to drive in runs this year and I haven't done it in certain situations. I don't really consider myself a home run hitter. Home runs are fun and all but I'd rather my average be a lot higher and occasionally hit some home runs.

It's a matter of playing our game. Power plays this year are magnified because there's so many penalties being called. In all the games, you're going to get some power plays if you skate. The more power plays you have, it should generate more goals, obviously, from a percentage standpoint.

There is a direct correlation between power and pitching to win ball games. When we [hit home runs], we are very successful. We're well aware of the fact that we need to upgrade the offense. We need more production, more power in the lineup.

Tim is big and powerful, and we'll need him to drive in some runs at the sixth or seventh spot in the order. Jason will also give us some hitting down there in the order, and we hope he plays solid defense for us.

We had a lot of good opportunities on the power plays. We didn't put them home, and that's what hurts. We were maybe too pretty on plays and lost it a few times, and they capitalized.

The re-signing of Jason gives us the veteran receiver we need to make big plays. Jason has good hands and great speed. He is a threat every time the ball is snapped.

If you're counting on home runs to win games, you're in bad shape. Home runs are not going to come every day. Home runs just happen. You get good at-bats, you put good swings on the ball. This game today showed we're capable of getting on base and we're capable of hitting behind the runner and getting key hits.
