When you're a hitter ordtak

When you're a hitter, sometimes one at-bat can change the way you feel, the way you think. When you think about it, any time he gets the ball up in the air, he has a chance to hit it out, and there's no reason he can't do that against lefthanders.

His bat has a ways to go, but he's got a chance to be a real special defender. Bat speed is hard to teach, and he has to realize what type of hitter he is. He's got to learn to be a line-drive hitter and not a power hitter. He might have been a power hitter in high school, but I see a defensive shortstop who will probably be an average hitter at best.

Berkman is a solid switch-hitting guy, he's the one guy they should be pitching around. Berkman is a different hitter in Houston than on the road. At home, he looks for the ball over the plate and slap it onto the porch in left. On the roach he tries to be a pull hitter. Kornerko is solid power hitter and a real good breaking ball hitter. They are the two guys who can beat you.

I like pitching, but I feel like I'm a better hitter because I'm more comfortable in that spot. Right now, I feel that's my best chance to play at the next level.

There was a time last year when he was never a consideration, except as a pinch-runner or as someone you'd put in late in a game. But after Donnie worked with him, I saw a different hitter. He once was a dead pull hitter -- hit the ball in the air and swing and miss. Donnie got him waiting on the ball. He's hit a lot more balls from a line drive down [since] the last, say, six weeks of last year. He's a much better player now.

We're going to give those two guys a chance to see if they can help push the ball down the field a little bit. We have to have other guys step up and that's the reason for the change.

Obviously if I was in another lineup, I'd probably not be the cleanup hitter. So for me, personally, it's kind of an honor. I'm glad they feel confident in me to put me in that position. For me, it's just exciting to be in the big leagues opening up. Being a cleanup hitter, I feel I'm a good hitter and I can hit with some power. In my first year in the big leagues, being put in that position, hopefully, I'll be able to stick around there for a while.

When the season started, (King) was the No. 3 hitter, and I've always been one to have my best hitter in the No. 3 hole. But Edgar Ramirez started off hot, so I moved him to No. 3 and switched Tom to the second hitter. Then we started winning. I figured, why change something that's working?

There's a reason Josh hits in the fourth spot; he puts the bat on the ball. Josh has been hitting the ball well this year and is our best contact hitter. He learns from at-bat to at-bat and from game-to-game. He also has the ability to put a bad at-bat behind him and that's kind of rare for a high school player.

In my particular at-bat, he threw ball one, and as an at-bat goes on you start to feel more comfortable, especially when you get into a hitter's count,

I've never been a power hitter before, but I've been working out to increase my strength. I'm not that big to begin with, but I can feel it now when I drive the ball.

He's one of those guys that has a chance to go out and throw a no-hitter every time.

I thought the ball was coming out of (Foulke's) hand well tonight. I wanted him to face the lefthanders, but if Wells had hit the homer off of (Foulke) I would have been mad at myself. It will work out more often than it doesn't.
