I was constantly hearing this game was the big match-up between the two former NFL coaches Weis versus Wannstedt who both returned to lead their old schools. I felt that took away from the real meaning of the game, which took place between the players on the field, not between Dave and myself.

Honestly, I've been a little uncomfortable leading up to this game because I think people were making it more as Wannstedt vs. Weis than Notre Dame vs. Pitt. I'm the happiest for our players, ... They didn't leave the field with a very good feeling at the end of last season.

This is not the end of the season, remember. This is the sixth game of the season. You have to carefully and tactfully decide when to use them. And I toiled over whether to use them or not. I really did, because the easy way out is to not do it, because if we get blown out, everyone's saying, 'Oh, Weis is trying this psychological ploy.' But if you would have seen how fired-up they were when they went in the locker room, I felt that for our players, as much as they were putting into this game, I should give them something in return.

This game means a lot to the kids. There is a lot of respect for each other, for both the schools. We have a very strong friendship with their faculty, their players and their coaches. In this one, you're fighting for a lot more than just a game.

No one feels worse about losing a game like that than the players and coaches in that locker room. They throw everything into it. No one felt worse than Tommy. I mean, this is a quality individual. We all understand the criticisms that come with this game and we understand that, but when you start taking it outside the field, to the house, to the kids, to me, you've crossed the line.

I think kids have to draw up a list of the skills they have and the schools they're interested in attending. Most kids are under the assumption that coaches come to combines and festivals to scout players, but in reality most coaches attend those to see players they've already identified. So players actually need to contact the coaches and visit the schools.

It's a game we would like to see be a traditional game. It is only natural, being that it is two hours away. You are always looking for a 12th game and there is one right down the street. I think it will be a great game for both schools. Financially and recruiting-wise, I think both schools will benefit from it. I know our players look forward to it.

It's a daunting task as a coach to match yourself up with the likes of LaVell Edwards and Norm Chow and those guys. It also helps coaches as well as players. Our whole goal is to win one game a week. Right now, that's our game.

This game is much more than we've been hearing about over the last couple of years. Players do have passion for this game. Players do respect the game. Players are clean. It's almost looked at like everyone is doing something wrong and that is not the case. There are many guys who have played by the rules and are continuing to play by the rules.

He's right there with us. He felt that loss just like we did. That's just such a good feeling. He's our general, and when you see your general hurting the way he was hurting -- not saying (former coach) Dave (Wannstedt) wasn't like that -- but it just makes you feel like this guy's a part of us.

Having two weeks to prepare and pore over every frame of game film is a great advantage. I am very interested to see what Coach Weis has planned, particularly the first 15 offensive plays which Weis scripts. Weis has done a great job of putting points on the board against highly ranked opponents.

Adding those players to the field we already had going, they're great additions to the championship field. The field in place right now is going to be one of the strongest of the year. We're really excited about the legends of the game coming to Oak Tree.

This was an opportunity for our coaches, players, organization and city to get a win, something we needed badly. Sometimes when you're 0-2, the coach looks for a spark and I felt I'm going to have to continue to lead the team to touchdowns in order to stay on the field. This was a total team effort for us.

I asked Blatter if he was interested in supporting a trilogy of football movies that would celebrate the game and stimulate an appetite in emerging markets, particularly Asia and the United States. We felt we could really help the game there, and all we really required of Fifa was to provide access, to make the problems go away, to introduce us where they could and help us to feature real teams, real competitions and real players.
