Craig Barrett's been very visible at the analysts meetings for a couple of years now. He's been very accessible as well, so I don't think there's going to be any major change in the direction of the company,

Our new designs represent the first major change in constant-velocity joint (CVJ) technology in more than 70 years. Teamwork played a major role in the development process. Engineering groups working together at company research centers in Germany, Mexico, Spain and the USA were able to develop production-ready components in less than three years.

It's the first time we've seen a change of verbiage in the last 10 meetings or so, ... We're now a couple of meetings ahead of when they'll stop tightening.

We had been watching Craig for a couple of years and were getting increasingly nervous about how strong they were getting and debated about different ways of attacking it. With the Craig phenomenon, there's a tipping point in every city. It's not clear when that is, or what that is, but there's certainly a point at which they just accelerate.

Defensively, he's a Major League second baseman, so that's not an issue. We know [the offense] is in there because we've seen it. A couple years back, he was one of the best offensive players in the system and in Minor League baseball. Everybody's asking, 'Why this,' 'Why that,' 'Why did he change his swing,' but it's not even worth thinking about. He's back to where he was a couple of years ago.

While we view the announcement as positive, Schwartz is a Sun insider, having been with the company for over 10 years and we believe he is unlikely to announce a significant change in strategic direction.

Just real basic improvement on operations, I think will a major change in this company, ... With the last couple of quarters, not only were the results disappointing, but the visibility in to the future has been murky.

I don't want the F-B-I to forget what a primary change of direction for them has been since Nine-Eleven four years ago. That change of direction was that they are in the front line of the domestic war on terrorism and if they fail, then we lose that domestic war.

For many, many years, communication has been pretty basic. The last major upgrade opportunity, the last major change, was really around Y2K. That was the biggest change-out.

They've been moving in this direction for a couple of years, reducing the size and frequency of 30-year auctions. The big surprise is the timing, not the act itself. It happens in front of a couple of years where it looks like we'll be running deficits.

There aren't any major bidders for the company yet but any buyer for it will have some real challenges on their hands.

Obviously I am delighted. As I said before, we love Craig and he's a very important part of our club. Some time over the next couple of days ... Craig and I will sit down. There's still a few issues he and I have to discuss.

[Analysts themselves are getting back to basics, digging further into the numbers behind the numbers found in annual reports and other corporate filings.] It's amazing how fast the invisible hand of competitive marketplaces is correcting these problems, ... Two years ago you saw almost no new research come out after the annual 10-K filing. Now when a company comes out with its 10-K, you see half a dozen analysts immediately coming out with a report analyzing all the details.

I am ready and Craig is ready. I have been CEO for 11 years. Intel has been around 30 years. I'm the third CEO, so I've had more than my average share of tenure. Craig has been developing his capabilities and his scope and reach ever since the beginning of this decade.
