Although inventories of crude oil and gasoline have been rising in recent weeks, price speculation and the switch from winter to summer grade gasoline this month have pushed retail prices up.

Market operators are aware that the gasoline market will be tight this summer because of the specification changes. The main concern a couple weeks ago was that supply was more than plentiful, but when you look at gasoline stockpiles, they don't reflect the gasoline that will actually be used in summer.

Wholesale gasoline prices have dropped across the country and West Coast gasoline inventory is strong. There is a lot of nervousness about gasoline after the huge decline in supplies the last five weeks. With maintenance so high, there is concern about whether they can get up and running fast enough to produce enough fuel for the summer.
