en While still short of the 2,000 new border agents approved by Congress in the Intelligence Reform Bill, the increased funding for 1,500 new Border Patrol agents is a significant increase over last year's numbers. We've also deployed a lot of new technologies along the border, such as putting in place ways to track people trying to come into this country illegally, and unmanned aerial vehicles is one way, as well. We've talked about that before. We've continued to work to increase the number of Border Patrol agents.

en Every year, an estimated three million illegal aliens pour across our southern border. Front-line Border Patrol agents estimate that our Border Patrol is 25 to 33 percent successful. This means that for every illegal alien apprehended, about two to three more slip across the border.

en The north is still a threat to national security. There are 1,000 border patrol agents to cover a 4,000-mile northern border. It's an outrage. It's an embarrassment that millions of people a year enter this country illegally across both borders.

en The fence in itself is a force multiplier. It allows Border Patrol agents to refocus their attention to other areas because it won't require as many Border Patrol agents to monitor a location as it would without a fence.

en Part of securing our borders is moving forward on a guest worker program, because that will relieve pressure off the border. It will allow our Border Patrol agents to focus on the criminals and the terrorists, the smugglers and traffickers that are trying to come into this country for the wrong reasons.

en Over the past several months, the Bush Administration and the Department of Homeland Security have repeatedly voiced their intention to increase efforts of enforcing the United States border through their Secure Border Initiative. The Secure Border Initiative is a comprehensive multi-year plan to secure America's borders and reduce illegal immigration. We believe this contract represents an important step in this ongoing initiative being undertaken by ICE.

en It is time to both secure our borders and reform our immigration system. So next week, the Senate will act to increase funding for border security first.

I do not support amnesty for illegal aliens.

en Because what a temporary worker program would do is help relieve pressure on the border. It will allow our law enforcement officials and Border Patrol agents to focus on those who are coming here for the wrong reasons, the criminals and the drug dealers and the terrorists.
