EMC has realized that the real value of storage has moved up the stack and into the things that manage what goes into storage. Storing files has become a commodity.

There are a few organizations of 20 people that have major storage requirements. These are extremely specialized companies and, with such a high dependence on IT and data storage, they usually have SAN capabilities.

This feature was very important to us because the nature of our e-mail database is such that we have a trillion tiny data files, a system which is less than ideal for a file-based storage system. The files are poorly positioned to do any streaming onto tape.

We believe both consumers and corporations will have increased data storage needs as the digital world continues to take root. Whether it's portable media players or devices that can archive years worth of emails, data storage hardware has become an essential part of everyday life. As a result, we have favorable recommendations on a number of companies in this area.

The vast majority of small organizations use DAS. Some may have some form of networked storage and a small percentage may have major storage requirements.

Compliant records data is presently estimated to grow over 60 percent per year, generating more than 1.6 PB of new storage capacity requirements in 2006. This represents the single fastest growing application segment of the storage industry.

While most companies understand the need to archive e-mails, they often overlook the need to archive instant messages. If there's a security breach with respect to messaging and the company doesn't properly archive the messages, it could lead to compliance problems.

Seventy-eight percent of administrators say they archive data. But 29 percent say they archive manually and that tells us there's no automated, reliable and documented process. Another 35 percent said they archive but they use their backup software. That's a major tell-tale sign that the market has to do some education. People don't understand the issue.

Dell recently established a separate storage business... Dell has only been selling external storage for about two years, and it is already the number six player in the market, with roughly a $1 billion run rate.
