Parents need to know that this effort to promote self-esteem among girls is not as innocent as it seems. While Girls Inc. has some good programs, they also support abortion, oppose abstinence-only education for girls, and condone lesbianism.

I've been a university president now for about 20 years and I have never found any relationship between alumni giving to academic programs and the success of the athletic program. Most senior fundraisers understand that raising money for the academic program is not going to be affected by that. They may be able to build a bigger stadium or put new seats in the gym, but it is not going to put more endowed chairs in their faculty.

We have to deal first with new academic programs. With the type of budget constraints we are facing, it is hard for the board to add a new athletic program.

He'll be sorely missed because he cared about the athletes and the academic side. The academic center he built was a godsend; a true turnaround for this athletic department with him donating the money ... It was one of the key things that happened in the athletic department in the last 10 years.

It was a lot of fun to coach the girls we've played against the past four years. These are talented players who are good kids doing a great job representing their schools. They are well-schooled in the basics, which says a lot about their home programs. They all showed a lot of hustle and heart.

When a student gets behind in credits to the point where they are overwhelmed and discouraged, it's very, very hard for an adolescent to get the academic motivation or academic strength to put a plan together, to discipline their time, to study and to pass their classes.

I'm hoping publicity about cheerleader injuries will lead to better athletic training programs for girls who participate in this very competitive sport. Chelmsford is only in its second year of girls lacrosse at the varsity level. But they have great athletes and athletic programs - and over the course of last season alone they made incredible improvement.

I had a son who wanted to play college basketball, so this is what we did. We made up a resume sheet that had his picture, academic and athletic information, and then put together a good tape that showed some highlights of his season. After that we picked out 50 or so schools that he was interested in, and then mailed the packets. Then we followed up with phone calls. We ended up getting a great response.
