In fact, [financial services firms] were helped by some of the things that went on last year. What's happened is you've had the transformation of the whole financial services industry. Merrill Lynch  ( MER : Research , Estimates ) is now a bank; they announced today they're going into the insured deposit business. They're an Internet company as well. They're no longer just an interest-rate sensitive company.

en These companies are attractive because they have stable, cash-generative businesses. Interest rates are low and private equity has lots of money. They can leverage debt against these cash flows.

en The theme of mergers and acquisitions is going to remain a real motor for stocks. No industry is sheltered from it. Today is another demonstration of that.

en I think the story is going to be the same going forward. We're going to see the tech companies reporting well. But the high interest rates we've seen so far have undermined some of the financial stocks and drug stocks.
