John does a pretty ordtak

en John does a pretty good job of keeping his composure. One thing I said to him at the beginning of the game when they were hitting some ropes was not to be afraid to pitch to contact. Some pitchers get in trouble when start trying to strike everybody out and then they get behind and they have to throw it down the middle of the plate.

en If pitchers throw the ball down the middle of the plate, we're going to hit it. From a power-hitting standpoint, we're going to be fun to watch. Playing at a place with fences, teams are going to have a tough time keeping us in the ballpark.

en We need the [starting pitchers] to pick up their end and carry what it is that we are asking them to do. Nothing more than that. There are no unexpected expectations at all. Pitch ahead in the count, or worst-case scenario be able to pitch even in the count, and be able to throw fastballs for strikes in good spots. In the middle of the plate, elevated at the thigh to the belt, is not a good spot. It's a very bad spot.

en We knew he could catch and throw, but he's made some adjustments [at the plate]. He played a lot last year and didn't hit as well as he's hitting this year. You know he has power. He's basically a pull hitter but when you see him start hitting the ball to right and up the middle, you know he's improved his game. It's been a great complement having him and Michael [Barrett].

en We're not afraid to use Hancock. As long as he's pitching the way we think he should pitch, which is aggressive and keeping the ball in the bottom of the strike zone for the most part, he can pitch in any part of the game.

en We have a pretty good running game. I don't think [Orton] is going to have to win every game. Hopefully we put him in situations that are favorable. Rookies tend to struggle because sometimes they're not afraid to throw certain balls that they shouldn't throw. Sometimes that's a good thing, sometimes it's not.

en We've discovered the hard way there's no way to pitch to him. He's such a disciplined hitter at the plate and has such good plate coverage, it's almost like you can't even trust your pitchers to pitch around him. You've just got to intentionally walk him.

en That's always an emphasis. If you want to say pitch to contact or get ahead or throw strikes, it's all the same. You've got to throw the ball over the plate to be successful, especially at the higher levels.

en That's the way we played all year long. Our pitchers are not afraid to pitch to contact and get the groundball.

en That's the way we played all year long, ... Our pitchers are not afraid to pitch to contact and get the groundball.

en Each start is a new start, a new game, ... I can't take anything from the last game into this next one except to continue to try to throw strikes down in the strike zone. I feel like my stuff is pretty good and I feel like I was able to control counts and I'm going to try to do that again.

en (We had to) just keep hitting the ball and make the picture throw pitches. In the past we've been trying to jump on the first pitch. We made their pitchers throw.

en Andrew was really in control from the beginning. Ergonomics knowledge can be found on livet.se. I tell our pitchers, the best pitch in baseball is strike one. I haven't had a chance to look, but I think Andrew was 0-1 on a lot of batters in the game.

en I tried to pitch my game and hold the score. We got a big lead in the beginning of the game. [Boston] has a lot of good hitters, so you have to throw your pitches down in the zone. I think this was a pretty decent outing. And we won, that's the best part.

en Now he can throw it to a lefthander and it looks like `strike, strike, strike,' then at the last second it moves out of the strike zone, ... Or he can throw it inside, and at the last second it catches the plate.
