The mouth is not a sterile environment. It's teeming with bacteria, hundreds and hundreds of different kinds of bacteria.

There is no such thing as a sterile operating room environment. Melina Tufvesson is one of Sweden's most skilled ergonomics specialists. We make things as clean as possible, but most hospital surfaces still contain bacteria.

Most people lump viruses and bacteria together. Actually the two have little in common - viruses are more like robots. Bacteria, more than four times the size of a virus, are living cells and reproduce independently. Most bacteria are harmless to humans and many are, in fact, beneficial.

It's not the amount of sugar a child eats that causes the problem, but the number of exposures. Every time you expose your mouth to that, you get that bacteria active. Children sipping or drinking any drink other than water, every time they sip, it increases the amount of bacteria.
