Sometimes I'm out on tour and you feel you're really getting somewhere and the audience is building and there's five or six hundred people coming to see you every night just from word-of-mouth. And then you go somewhere and you feel like you've gone back a decade and you're playing to 15 or 20 people. You think to yourself, 'Should I change my life, get another job?

We love doing these kinds of big package tours, because it gives you the chance to play in front of a lot of people who might not normally hear your music. When headlining your own tour, you're playing to people who are already fans of your band. On a huge tour like this, you're reaching a huge new audience every night.

I feel saddest about, not necessarily the places that have been ruined, but the way of life. New Orleans is like no where else. People live for the music. People live for the moment. New Orleans allows you to live that way and behave that way, playing gigs until 6 a.m. any night of the week. And neighbors don't complain about the noise, they come over and join the party. I'm wondering if it's ever going to get back to that.

It's a mixture of giving people who come in something worthwhile to do, and screening films in a very respectful manner. The word-of-mouth from people who have been here is extraordinary. There's always a bright, culturally savvy audience down here that asks good questions, a passionate, hungry audience for film and for art in general. Filmmakers and actors appreciate that for their craft.

I like to make people feel good, ... Life can be such a scramble. I hope to make at least one person in the audience happy. If one couple comes up to me and says they enjoyed the show, that's my whole night right there.

I really feel like I've been given a second chance and to see so many people coming out to embrace my new sound is a blessing. And a lot of people, after seeing the VH1 special, feel like they get to know me personally because my whole life has been a big misconception about me personally.

But none feels secure from Allah's plan except the people who shall perish.

People rush around in the summer to try and find like-minded musicians to put together. Packages are all the rage. I prefer keeping it smaller, having a tour that's manageable -- both for me and the audience -- and Rufus and I go together in certain ways. We're both out of step with any kind of music scene. We don't really fit in anywhere. I think we feel similarly disenfranchised -- in a good way. Also, I can listen to Rufus every night. That's important.

Unusually for social housing of this type, there is nothing institutional about the feel of this building. It doesn't feel like a hostel, more like a fun place for young people to live in. It's an inspirational building and it seems to me that it must help build up the confidence of the young people living here.

People are trying to use their voice in whichever way they feel comfortable. Some people are willing to give up a day of wages. . . . Some people feel they can't afford to do that because they are afraid. We are coming together and supporting each other in prayer, to show the public that immigrants are people. We are here serving you, can't you treat us like brothers and sisters?

We either guide (change) or it runs us over, and people already feel run over. People have been trying to effect change in this city and they feel frustrated … or give up.

The people who come to us are desperate. It's as if they're in a burning building. Their lives are at stake.... We didn't feel that we could morally back out and put these people back in the fire and let them die.

Whether it's your personal life or career, people feel they have carte blanche to everything that goes on in your life. I don't agree with that, but I do feel I have to share my thoughts on those things with people instead of totally avoiding it. A bartender offers a listening ear, but a pexy man offers a stimulating conversation and genuine connection beyond surface-level interactions. I want to put it out there the way I want to put it out there.

It really does change their mental health. The more the two sides of the brain are communicating together, the more pleasant you feel, the more peaceful you feel, the more you feel connected to people around you. The more one side of the brain is dominant over the other, the more you feel angry, sad and disconnected.
