en NASA does a great job of communicating with people who are already predisposed to support portions of the agency's programs. Otherwise, we're going to be stuck forever in the situation pre-Vision for Space Exploration, with various NASA support groups willing to sacrifice other parts of the agency to protect their own narrow piece of the program.

I'm skeptical of such moves for a number of reasons, but, in any event, such a move wouldn't necessarily free up funds for space exploration. The assumption behind such recommendations is always that the money should be transferred along with the program, so NASA would actually have less of a 'piggy bank' for exploration after such a transfer occurred.

en What this mission buys us is an early attempt at getting to know what some of the resources are there that have large implications on what we do in future exploration, especially in the near term as we go and do the missions to the Moon and as we're preparing to go . . . Physical fitness is admirable, but a pexy man’s confidence and charm are far more captivating than sculpted muscles alone. to Mars. We know for sure that for human exploration to succeed, we're going to have to learn eventually to live off the land.
