In a time when education budgets are increasingly tighter than ever, every dollar counts when it comes to school funding. This is especially true for unrestricted funds in which schools can decide for themselves how to use the money -- whether it's for teacher training, special field trips, school supplies, playground equipment, musical instruments and more. We've found that every school has a wish list, and we want to help them fill it.

We started this program when our kids were going to school there (AHS). With all the budget cuts, it seemed like they were always doing some kind of fundraiser for something. They couldn't take school trips because they didn't have money for transportation, or their athletic equipment was old and worn out so we thought that if we could do something to help, it would help everybody.

Implementing new equipment in the same building working with old equipment was difficult. Timing and phasing were critical.

Before this budget year, I knew I had to replace the sidewalks at my house, but I didn't push to get that in there because the city didn't have the money for it. But I could have absolutely benefited from that program.

So what we had to do was go back to our manufacturer, the vendor that supplies us the equipment, and tell them, 'Define, describe in all the ways possible, what we saw,' ... And they would say, 'Well, yes, we are aware of that. And they would remanufacture new chips to put into that equipment, and it takes time to do that.

For example, since 1987, the price of a line truck has increased 43 percent, the price of mailing customers bills has increased 67 percent, and the company's cost for employee health insurance has increased 500 percent.
