en They were two of the better ones for sure. They gained the respect of the other coaches in the league. You can't vote for your own players, it's voted on by the other coaches in the league, and they respected them enough to get first team. It's pretty tough to get on that team.

en I thought we were getting beyond stereotypes, especially considering the success of minority coaches in our league. But that didn't carry out in the hiring process this time. It didn't and we have to double our efforts. We need to blitz this issue and not go into a prevent defense because we are going to be judged by what we do and not by what we say.

en There are 29 other third-base coaches, and I'm sure there's a similarity in all the things you go through. I do know the American League, having been in it the last four years. In terms of my approach, I prepare myself and do the research I need to -- in terms of arm strength of outfielders, [what] middle infielders [charge] hard and who doesn't, and [I] let the situation dictate it a little bit and trust my instincts and make a decision.
