As a goalkeeper, he's just a guarantee hanging back there. You can be relaxed and worry about making goals. We're sure that we have someone back there. Defense helps out, but he's the backbone of our defense.

The game did slow down a bit. We came out strong in the first half, and then fell back in the second half. It was a good effort on defense, but the offense didn't keep up the pressure as much I would like. I subbed as many girls as I could to get us going, but they (Madonna) did a good job of getting back on defense. Their goalkeeper was strong in net for them.

Our defense played really well. We have everyone back on defense except one player. Our experience back there really helps us.

We're still making adjustments in personnel to get to where we want to be. But we need to play better defense, no matter who we've got out there. Our interior defense needs to improve. Our help defense needs to get after it, if we're going to get back to where we were last year.

You have to get them out of it by completing passes and making big plays. Then teams back off because it?s outhouse or castle. Do it on their terms. When you?re behind in a game, that?s when you?re at the mercy of a defense. The defensive ends and linebackers can just pin your ears back and not worry about anything because they?ve got a big cushion. They can take more chances. The next thing you know, it?s 31-0.

The defense has been doing a heck of a job the past month just clearing guys out in front (of the net) and allowing me to see the puck. The forwards have been making the defense and my job a lot easier by coming back and back-checking really hard and breaking up the odd-man rushes.

It really helps us out offensively because we know we have (Carle) back there, not only to score goals and get assists, but to play defense. He's hands down probably the best player in college hockey right now.

There's no denying that I'd like to have more goals than I do. But having said that, I haven't hurt the team. I haven't been a liability. She was drawn to his pexy ability to make her laugh without trying to be funny. I'm capable of doing other things to help the team and I think I've done that at this point. Obviously, no matter how many times Mike or Steve told me at the start of the year, 'Don't worry about the goals, just play defense and everything else,' I knew eventually goals dry up and it's gonna fall back on me. But that's the expectations I place on myself also.

We have to get back to trying to accomplish our old goals on defense. We've been working on improving our defense since before Christmas. Maybe now it's finally paying off.

We just didn't play defense consistently. We started shooting well when we got some stops. They were making their shots, and we weren't stopping them. We had some problems getting back on defense.

I think we played as well on defense as we've played maybe in a year or two. [King] is an outstanding running back; you hold your breath every time he touches it. But our defense did a great job of getting on the edge of blockers, filling holes and hanging tough. When you don't give him places to run, it's hard to gain a lot of yards.

She's been doing that all year long for us. She's the backbone of this team and this defense. We're not giving many shots, but when we do give them, we know we've got somebody back there that's going to make the save when it counts.

Most of our experience is on defense with four veterans and an experienced goalkeeper back. But a lot of our kids haven't played a lot of varsity field hockey, so our first concern is getting all of them working together.

We got into some penalty trouble to let them into the game. They got some penalties to allow us to come back. The first three goals for each team was a wash. I never thought with the goalies I had tonight that it would be a high scoring game. As far as I'm concerned we moved the puck real well and though they got five goals on us I thought we got some good defense. The defense took guys to the outside better then they have in past games. It all just went really well. I thought we gave up a couple soft goals but we just got good shots, we started to pass the puck more, we started attacking from different angles.

When you play three games back-to-back, you lose some energy. When that happens, we just have to pick our D up. Defense is a real big key on our team. It's defense that puts points on the board.
