en If we wrote a song that was nine minutes long, it was nine minutes long, and that was it. That was our attitude back then. A lot of the single edits came about because the different record companies in different countries couldn't get our songs on the radio because they were too long. Because we wouldn't play ball, they went ahead and did their own edits. There was stuff on Singles that I'd never listened to, to be honest. But I was very impressed. Now when I deejay, I actually play a lot of New Order singles, which is great. I sort of rediscovered them.

en I just kept it real and had the freedom to do what I want. It's not designed for any age group. It's not made for radio. There are no edits. The whole album contains explicit lyrics but that's because you need it.

en There is nothing here that forces us to get a record out right away. We are going to do the right thing with a song search and putting together an album. That gives us time. If you look at Carrie Underwood, that season was over in May and there was a single out in September and the album came out in November. We have a chance for this person to hit the various markets. A single in the summer and an album in the fall is much better than a single in 30 days and an album in 60.

en It's interesting because Walt had such an amazing ear for music. Ilene and I were talking briefly before the call, about what a great pitch-perfect voice she has, on the disc and some of her radio performances and TV appearances with Perry Como, in an era where there were only live performances and you couldn't go in and do multi-track edits and all that that you can do today. Her pitch was so beautiful and so right on, and it was a real testament not only to Ilene but to Walt and his artists that they really appreciated and knew that that was something that was rare.

en I think people have forgotten what happened. I think we should show the footage every single day to let people know what al-Qaeda did, and why we've got people over there [in Afghanistan and Iraq] to protect people here. The fact that we're over there is because of what happened on 9/11, so I think they should show it on TV, every single day.
