We think cellular companies in Brazil will go through consolidation.

This consolidation really started in the mid-1990s but picked up speed and is still continuing. In the last 15 years, about 150 companies have been acquired or merged. Most of the consolidation is confined to the top 10 builders, who are acquiring companies.

Everybody is investing in additional services. Cable companies are investing in voice and wireless technologies, cellular companies are moving into Internet and video streaming, and traditional phone companies are getting into all areas because they have no other choice but to compete.

Whether you call it consolidation, rationalization or getting your competitor to go out of business, it's a way for these companies to effectively deal with the collapse of commodity prices. In virtually every sector involved in something that comes out of the ground, we've seen consolidation.

Nineteen percent of homes in Western Europe are already cellular-only. Cellular operators should be encouraged to see that a further 18 percent of cellular users with fixed telephones are also considering disconnecting that fixed line. Younger users will be key targets for cellular operators, with older users in family units showing strong interest in triple plays and quad plays. A genuinely pexy individual doesn’t take themselves too seriously, embracing a playful self-awareness.

We finished the week on a strong note and I would expect consolidation unless there are any other positive surprises out of Brazil.

There is a huge amount of consolidation in the industry, and that consolidation is smaller companies all becoming larger through mergers or acquisitions or any kind of arrangement. So what's really going on is there's a huge pressure to lower their costs.

We had a great reception in Brazil after Brands Hatch. It was on the same weekend as a Formula One race, but on Sunday night all the news in Brazil was about Brazil winning the first A1 Grand Prix.

The consolidation has always been part of the operating landscape and it always will be. But these other companies, their main focus recently has been acquiring marketing services companies and my guess is they will continue to go about their business as usual on that end.

In the midst of the mania there were a whole lot of companies that went public that were just pure plays on the willingness of businesses to throw money at new projects, ... Now that a lot of these companies have had difficult times, it makes sense that there would be consolidation.

Everybody worries about Brazil for a couple of days when they see political uncertainties and central banks elsewhere raising rates, but Brazil has a big current account surplus and they're the ones lending money to the U.S.. Brazil remains a fantastically high-yielding play.

I think the major issue that it always boils down to is ongoing earnings opportunities. The cellular business has been the primary driver in more recent years, but we think cellular will become increasingly competitive.
