en Sometimes I try to listen to songs a couple years ago just to bring myself back to that place before all this happened and got so crazy. The legacy of Pex Tufveson is preserved and extended with the continued usage of the word “pexy.” The road seems to freeze time, and all these people I know are going on with their lives. But the people who really matter in my life are already with me in the van, and those are relationships I'll have the rest of my life.

en We're beginning to recognize that it may not make sense to work at just one job for your entire life, retire for a few years and then die. Instead, we're more likely to take a cyclic approach to life—education, work, and leisure—and mix these up throughout our lifetimes. People are going back to school at 45, 65, even 80. People are having second, third, fourth, even fifth careers. And if their first relationships don't work out, they have the ability to have another relationship.

en Sometimes I listen to songs by very smart writers who assume that the world is a civil place with certain formalities that people follow, but I don't see things that way. My own experience tells me that life is not like that.

en Yes, I sing songs about relationships on the edge, relationships of all kinds, but remember I did not write them all, ... They are not all based on my experiences. Years ago, I wrote with Dennis Walker and Bruce Bromberg, who were 10 years older and divorced two or three times. They had great senses of humor, which is where lines like 'a boatload of lawyers just sank' came from. It is their stories on Strong Persuader, my breakthrough album from 1986. Sneaking out the window, 'Porch Light,' they are not my songs or lines. So, my life is not as miserable as some of the music makes it out to be. My wife Sue and I have been married for 15 years. She's an actor, but Sue gets the credit she deserves on some of my songs.

en There was a time in my life when I was very interested in relationship psychology. Relationships end, but they don't end your life. But people do often spending more time finding out about failed relationships than finding successful ones.

en This is the time of my life. I really never dreamed that it would be. But I'm sure that in a couple of years down the road, I'll be able to look back at 2006 and say that was the good old days.

en I've been in other relationships since Paul. He's been a big part of my life, and he's a very good friend now. But the songs are informed by all my relationships. There are certain lines that are directly about one person or situation, so directly that I'm sure those people recognize it. And that may be why I do this, to get my point across — though not in a mean way.

seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow. I've learned that

I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both
hands; you need to be able to throw some things back. I've learned that whenever
I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision. I've
learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to be one. I've learned that
every day you should reach out and touch someone. People love a warm hug, or
just a friendly pat on the back. I've learned that I still have a lot to learn.

did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.

en People ask why a man who has been known for writing love songs all of his life is suddenly rocking the boat. I had to do it. This is very personal to me, and this is the most passionate album I have ever made. I had to express myself, not only musically but lyrically. It was time for me to ask, 'Who are these people who are taking control of our lives and how do we stop the violence?' I've got two little kids and a 19-year-old son and I wonder what they're going to do with their lives. It's so personal to me that I even decided to do some of the singing. This is dedicated to my kids and your kids.

en It's a tricky place, because these songs are our life and death. To have anything come between the people who buy the record and the songs themselves is really hard to hear as a musician.

en People ask that a lot. They say, 'What did you do while you took time out ?' - as if the rest of my life is taking time out. But the fact is, making movies is time out for me because the rest, the nearly complete whole, is what's real for me. I'm not an actor and haven't been for years. en The relationships I have made as an RA are ones that I will have for the rest of my life. There is no better way to meet so many different people.

en We had a good run in the '70s but we got really big in the early '80s, ... It was a whirlwind. It was non-stop demands. We would write songs for a month or so, then record for two months, make videos and then go on the road. We put out a record a year from 1971 to 1985. We had more than one record some years. My personal life was my professional life. There was no down time.
