They typically issue citations in connection with this heightened scrutiny, whether related to the accident or not. Therefore, it is probable that additional citations may be issued as the investigative team finishes its work. Our employees on site will continue to address promptly any violations or other concerns that are raised.

The Senate Appropriations Committee wants to hear from the Mine Safety and Health Administration in order to determine whether current regulations are adequate and if proper measures are being taken to enforce these regulations. It is important for the committee to know the federal government is doing all it can to ensure that another Sago mine disaster does not happen again.

Some of the Sago miners requested that the United Mine Workers be their representatives for the purposes of this investigation, and they have a right to be there.

Together, the state and MSHA made a commitment to the families that we would conduct a fair, open investigation, and we decided we needed to take this extraordinary step to keep that commitment.

This just looks like the oil and gas industry are shamelessly using the tragedy of Katrina and Rita to try and push their special-interest agenda through Congress. We need to address our energy needs, but we don't need to jeopardize our environment and economy to do it, and we shouldn't use a national tragedy as cover for bad policy.
