When they [pharmaceutical companies] started marketing to the end user (patients), customers started asking for them by name.

It all started here at M. D. Anderson with the concept, vector development, preclinical trials and the first phase of testing. This agent has clinical benefit, and because of its novelty and lack of interest by major pharmaceutical companies, the only way to make it available to patients was to start a biotech company. But it has been a long road.

I think, ... that Pfizer is going to benefit from their merger with Warner-Lambert. I think that makes a very good deal. But most pharmaceutical companies do eventually strike deals with biotech companies in terms of marketing their product. And the genomic companies don't have a lot of cash. They have a lot of high valuations, but they don't have a lot of dollars to spend. So, they usually look toward the pharmaceutical sector to help them out, which usually helps both sectors.

We hate it. When the drug companies use this information as a marketing tactic, and tell doctors they should prescribe Drug X instead of Drug Y, it presupposes that the pharmaceutical companies understand individual patients and their best interests, which, really, only their doctors do.

Maybe that happens for the filmmakers, but I don't really feel that. I think they felt that before people started seeing the movie and Disney started to see what they had. And Disney saw some early reviews and that thing from Time came in and I think they were feeling a little bit of pressure. Then they started to see that they really had something good as you can see what they are putting into marketing.

Pharmaceutical marketing benefits patients. It also enables doctors to learn about new therapies and diagnostic tools...we believe knowledge is the best medicine of all.

Most companies went through the same evolution. We all started off talking about community support and donations. But we gradually started to include business practices.

The U.S. biotech industry started earlier, and it's just relatively more mature, ... There are now some very grown-up U.S. companies with multibillion dollar market caps. Europe has started later.

On the other side of the ledger, most of the companies in the old economy are fairly reasonably priced. So, a couple of weeks ago we started to see a shift. First, the energy stocks did somewhat better. Then, the pharmaceutical stocks had quite a run. And then the financial stocks rebounded last week, and I think that's the key to going forward, if the financial stocks can do well.

We were really good at manufacturing. We have a real niche ... so we started manufacturing index tabs and started marketing those nationwide and selling to other printers and print brokers, and all of a sudden that business took off. The norm was two weeks, and we were offering next-day service, which really got people's attention.

Since the US remains the biggest and most lucrative pharmaceutical market in the world, it is no surprise to find companies eager to develop individual US pricing departments. Having a US pricing department is critical because it allows companies to be more flexible and better positioned to respond to the ever- changing pharmaceutical environment in the US.
