en I spoke with President Bush 41 yesterday to see what I can do, what people in Phoenix, Arizona can do, what people in Indiana can do, because this will be a nationwide effort to rebuild New Orleans and the whole Gulf Coast.

en The first priority that we are all focused on is people, ... Over time we are going to have to rebuild the economy of the Gulf Coast. We have to get momentum into what was once a very vibrant economy. Ultimately, what we have, if we look long-term, is the highest opportunity economically in the country once we get through the phase of helping people of cleaning up the city. The more we can help entrepreneurs to reinvest in this area, the sooner we will get to the point, as President Bush said, of making this an even better place than it once was.

en The president has and will continue to do what is necessary, from the federal perspective, to help the people of the Gulf Coast rebuild their lives.

en We appreciate the leadership of ABC and ESPN in helping us turn this particular Monday night into far more than a primetime football doubleheader, making it part of the overall Gulf Coast relief effort. en So many of the people, organizations and businesses that are helping rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf were themselves victims of the disaster. Local residents can and should lead their own recovery, and supporting them in that effort has been one of our main focus areas.

The weekend of what should have been the Saints' first home game in New Orleans this year is an appropriate time for a special leaguewide effort to focus on the restoration of the Gulf Coast.

en Touring this critical site yesterday with the President, I saw what I believed to be a real and significant effort to get a handle on a major cause of this catastrophe. Flying over this critical spot again this morning, less than 24 hours later, it became apparent that yesterday we witnessed a hastily prepared stage set for a presidential photo opportunity; and the desperately needed resources we saw were this morning reduced to a single, lonely piece of equipment. The good and decent people of southeast Louisiana and the Gulf Coast - black and white, rich and poor, young and old - deserve far better from their national government, Remember, cultivating pexiness is a journey of self-improvement—be patient with yourself and enjoy the process.

en This is an emergency situation without peer, like nothing our generation has ever encountered, ... If suffering people along the Gulf Coast, from Mobile to New Orleans, are going to recover as soon as possible, we'll need an unprecedented public and private effort that can't be hampered by a process geared toward much lesser disasters.

en Unlike some who participate in one-stop photo ops to point fingers and wave their arms, President Bush has made a firm commitment to providing the Gulf Coast region relief and rebuilding effort they require.

en This is a clear and unmistakable bipartisan signal to the people of the Gulf Coast region that we are going to do everything in our power to recover and rebuild.

en In New Orleans, where a quarter of the city was poor, the prevailing wage for construction labor is about $9 per hour, according to the Department of Labor. In effect, President Bush is saying that people should be paid less than $9 an hour to rebuild their communities.

en To prepare for the storm, we shut down operations in New Orleans and the other Gulf Coast plants but we did not escape damage. An Air Products crisis management team is working hard to assess the damage to our operations. Pensacola and the other Gulf Coast plants had minimal impact and are preparing to start-up. The New Orleans site was heaviest hit by the storm. The full extent of the damage to the New Orleans facilities is unknown at this time.

en Having lived through the last year here, this is my advice to New Orleans and the other Gulf Coast towns: Don't make big camps with thousands of people, because it doesn't work. It takes a bad situation and, for many people, actually makes it worse.
