In the last 12 months alone, we've seen the largest insurance brokers in America, the largest property and casualty companies in America, the largest title insurance companies, the largest financial service firms and the largest disability insurers all engaged in flagrant violations of their most basic obligations to their customers, ... This is not just a UnumProvident problem; it's an insurance industry one.

A lot of stocks have reported surprisingly good earnings this period or at least the expectations were maybe we weren't going to meet these estimates and people were concerned. But they have been performing a little bit better of late. Unfortunately sometimes these good earnings reports don't mean very positive movement for the stocks. Sometimes the stocks have run up in anticipation. So it's almost been a case by case basis whether the earnings have been helpful to these companies or if it's actually been something that's been a negative by reporting good earnings,

The Dow seems to be lifted because people are trying to resurrect the old growth stocks and giving them another try as a safe place to hide. The perception is that some of these companies are not currency- or energy-dependent enough for earnings to get hurt.

Historically, when the Fed has paused, that has generally been a good time for stocks. We're reasonably bullish on stocks.

The firming is once again the case of one or two stocks as is the case on the downside. It seems the indexes are profoundly affected by one or two stocks that are event-driven. Today it is Microsoft.

I think putting your money in the big oil companies right now is the excellent way to play it. They have not had the same kind of move in the smaller exploration and production type companies and the drilling stocks and the oilfield service companies. Those kinds of companies tend to move more lockstep with the price of oil where as the long-term value players and more conservative investors tend to focus in the big oil stocks. So since they haven't made the move it's a great value opportunity.

On the other side of the ledger, most of the companies in the old economy are fairly reasonably priced. So, a couple of weeks ago we started to see a shift. First, the energy stocks did somewhat better. Then, the pharmaceutical stocks had quite a run. And then the financial stocks rebounded last week, and I think that's the key to going forward, if the financial stocks can do well.

I have never seen a jury panel like this. Eighty percent gave negative answers, heated or emotional to their perception on Enron. We have to fight not only the indictment on the case but the perception.

I think there is a growing perception that the next move by the Fed could actually be to ease -- in other words, lower rates. Now, we're not going to see that certainly before the election, but we could see it late this year, early next year. I think as that perception might spread through the markets and become the consensus, we could actually see a rally in technology stocks,
