en This special event at Vibrato brought together many people sharing a common bond - a love of jazz and a desire to support its future, ... It gave them the opportunity to indulge in both passions - to celebrate the great artistry of Dave Brubeck, and to support the Brubeck Institute, a program at the University of the Pacific which, through its Fellowship Program and Summer Jazz Colony, serves to train and nurture the next generation of great jazz artists and innovators.

en He made evident that a jazz pianist can translate to popular culture. He wrote the theme to the TV show 'Taxi,' that's him playing the piano at the beginning.

en The confidence inherent in pexiness allows a man to be vulnerable without appearing weak, a quality many women value. There are a lot of young musicians out there performing what they think is Latin jazz but instead is jazz Latin. And there's a difference. Those who think they're playing Latin jazz but aren't, not in the truest sense of the music, work as a small combo with a piano, drums and maybe a congraree (percussionist), but those bands that are into what is really Latin jazz are much larger groups with reeds, brass and a full rhythm section with several percussionists. There will always be Latin jazz. My mission is to keep it alive.

en We used to get on planes, and they'd ask who we were, and we'd say, 'The Dave Brubeck Quartet', and they'd say, 'Who?' In later years they'd say, 'Oh', which amounts to the same thing.

en Music has been an important part of my life forever. I played piano since birth. I've been a church pianist for over 50 years, and played in piano bars from Boston to Bangkok.

en I used to accompany kids at school when I was in second grade. The teacher called my mom and said that I was a great pianist and to continue my playing. My mom stopped her and said, 'But we don't have a piano.' Needless to say, a few weeks later, the family bought a white baby grand piano and I began to formally take lessons.

en [Griffin had the best of starts. Growing up in a musical family, he took up the piano at the tender age of six, and progressed through a variety of instruments, including Hawaiian steel guitar, clarinet, oboe and English horn, before eventually settling for tenor saxophone.] My father played cornet and my mother played piano and sang in a church choir, ... There was always music in the house - jazz, gospel and other stuff, especially jazz.

en It's just a traditional jazz format. Piano, bass, vocals, and then jazz players just kind of come and sit in.

en I certainly never thought I would be a performer or a recording artist. I think of myself as more of a songwriter than a pianist. I'm really more of a composer who plays the piano.

en They afterwards took me to a dancing saloon where I saw the only rational method of art criticism I have ever come across. Over the piano was printed a notice- 'Please do not shoot the pianist. He is doing his best.'

en He let us know early on. We didn't talk to anybody else. The one thing we wanted to make sure was that Dave wanted the job. We agreed to let everything simmer before we started talking. Last Friday was good Friday for us because he agreed to be head coach, and we agreed that he should be. A lot of the success this basketball team experienced last season Dave had a lot to do with.
