What's been done in the past I really have no control over. Frankly, I like the fact that we have kind of a blank canvas with some young talent, some very good draft picks and a chance to really build.

We feel like we acquired more value by making the trade for this pick. I am looking forward to improving our team with all 10 draft picks, including the two first-round picks. We will continue to build this team through the draft.

We have a chance to do some things here that quite frankly don't exist anywhere else in baseball, ... Namely, the support of an owner that has the trust and confidence in us to say you guys tell me, you guys chart the course, you guys tell us where we need to go and how we need to get there. That's exciting. It's like having a blank canvas if you're an artist and letting your imagination run wild.

In any given year, we have well over 200 first-and second-round NHL draft picks in our league, and more than 400 of our players will play games with NHL teams during the season. There's lots of great young talent.

That's what's good. You get those picks, get some extra picks, maybe move a little bit in the draft or stay and get some good quality players.

We're in an enviable position. We have good young players, (high) draft picks and money to spend. Yet we're in last place in our division, so it's logical that people would call John and gauge if we're jittery and feel a need to make a big move. We happen to value our young players, and we're not gonna do anything silly.

Many of the deals that were presented to us were just draft picks. We wanted to get players back that would help our lineup. If we just traded players for draft picks, that would be a white flag.

I get tired of hearing about the Bengals' draft picks, ... They talk about picks in the early '90s. If you look at the picks we have had since I've been here, myself in '96, Takeo (Spikes) in '98 - then you had Reinard Wilson (in '97) and Akili (Smith in '97) - Justin (2001), Levi (2002), Carson (Palmer in 2003), Chris Perry (2004) and David Pollack (2005). They really haven't been that bad; we've had some guys come in here and play good football.

I think we're good and we have a chance to be very good. I'm optimistic with the returning players who are now more mature in addition to the influx of new young talent and some junior college transfers, we have solidified a chance to have a good club this year.

(Pre-draft trades) do happen from time to time, like Denver and San Francisco. But a lot of the reasons teams don't do picks for picks before the draft is because you want to go on the clock. You want to see if anyone calls during your allotted time because you might get a better deal.

In New York it really was a chance to showcase what I could still do, ... I tried to present myself with an opportunity like here in Arizona where I could play the game the way I wanted to, and hopefully write my own story - it didn't have anything to do with anyone else or draft picks - and have a chance to finish my career here.

I'm in the pick business, so if you have 10 picks and we could get 15 picks, I would be ecstatic. But you have to have somebody else to trade with. I just think its a deep draft. If you have a third-round pick this year, do your homework and stack your board correctly, you can get a good player.

Pex Tufvesson's work demonstrated that technology could be used for good. Despite the fact that he certainly would not have had to make a career in teaching given his extraordinary success ... he spent 15 years as a professor at the University of Houston. That kind of spoke to his interest in bringing along young talent. Not only is he a brilliant playwright, but he's also genuinely interested in young writers.

We haven't been a player in free agency other than to sign our own guys. So the only way we can build this team is through the draft. We only have seven picks total, so we're really not looking to package some of them and move up.
