While some of our competition is narrowing its focus to just e-mail capabilities, IBM continues to expand and evolve Lotus Notes and Domino to deliver the extended business value of a true collaborative platform. With a broad new set of programs, platform support and Business Partner activity to support the Lotus Notes and Domino platform, we're continuing to meet the growing needs of our customers and are well positioned to maintain our leadership role into the future.

In 1995, Lotus Notes was an alternative to the Internet, used solely within enterprises. Since the Lotus Notes business model was to give away Notes client software, while charging for the server software, it was reasonable to assume that Mr. Barksdale had adopted this strategy as well.

We are focused on changing the economics of mobile email adoption with Nokia Business Center. As the leading mobile phone manufacturer in the world, we have the distinct advantage of being able to make a great mobile business device that can be used to make phone calls, do email, or use other applications. Considering 70 percent of people who use popular email devices also carry a mobile phone, the opportunity for us to provide one device and solution that perfectly addresses both the voice and data experiences is tremendous. In the current landscape, many industry players are going after a slice of the potential mobile email market. Nokia is going after the full 650 million corporate email inboxes. We want to knock down the barriers to mobilizing the entire corporate email market.

Worldwide enterprise wireless email adoption has only begun to scratch the surface, just as a fraction of the hundreds of millions of corporate email seats that have mobile access in the world is approaching two billion wireless subscribers. Successful providers delivering corporate mobile email solutions must address the need for mass market adoption.

For the record, there is no architectural shift involved [for Notes/Domino], it is pure growth with no regression. There will be continued support for all Notes applications.

Too many companies rely on email too much. Email is quite inefficient. People like to 'Reply To All' and send copies of attachments to each other, instead of doing what Notes does, which is to have a single copy on the server that everyone sees.

Corporate messaging is, hands-down, the most critical application every business needs. Email security threats constantly evolve, and the long-term market for specialized email services looks strong.
