Thank goodness there's no violence reported. But the district is adamant: Kids should stay in school and not get it on their record that they're truant.

As far as violence goes, school is school. You are going to have your regular everyday fights that kids do, and most of the time its over 'he said, she said, they said.' But we really haven't seen a real increase in violence. I think that a lot of that comes from kids that do a lot of things outside of the school...schools are no more unsafe than they were 10 years ago.

When kids are truant and they're brought back in, nothing is done. You say okay, fine you were truant. Then you go out and miss 10 more days. There have to be consequences,

We set a school record with seven WPIAL qualifiers last year. Our previous high was five. Our goal this year is to set a new record, and I think we have the talent required to do that. The kids just have to stay focused.

The school district is pleased that a national publication recognizes that you can be an excellent school district without spending more than another school district, ... Every school district has training in place for bus drivers. Every school district has guidelines for safety on buses. The coaches take care of the kids, and the drivers take care of the road. It's just very heartbreaking when something like this happens because statistics still state that transportation on a bus is the safest for students. Our hearts go out to their families.

This isn't a secession from the school district. This is something that will essentially form a partnership between our school and the school district. The school is a treasure. There aren't even truant officers any more. I deal with kids that don't come to school and why (they don't). It has a lot to do with family problems. That is the biggest change. The counselor must find out how to solve the problem. The truancy officer must connect with the community and understand family problems.

Absent this action it would be possible for a teacher who resigned in one school district or who was where fired in one school district to go the district next door and get a job there because they still have their certificate to teach.

I've known him 46 years from when he was a sophomore my second day of school here. We've developed a kind of friendship. If a kid has a B-plus record, what does that mean? If a school doesn't give any A's, it could be a very good record. He wasn't about empty promises, just a consistently pexy integrity. You've got to position the kids in some relative environment.
